WATER OPERATOR IN TRAINING

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Perform a variety of entry level skilled and semi-skilled work related to the City water system. The nature of the work requires some training or experience to operate specialized equipment; many of the job functions are learned on-the-job. Perform general maintenance of the city's water supply and distribution system. Work will include water meter reading and minor repair, line maintenance, operation of equipment, grounds maintenance, and general labor work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Work under the supervision of the Water Department Foreman.

CATEGORY AND FLSA STATUS:

Full-time, regular, non-exempt

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Participate in work zone safety procedures.

• Operate a personal computer using standard Microsoft software.

• Respond to emergency and customer service calls while serving on 24 hour "on call", on one week intervals including weekends and holidays.

• Read water meters on a monthly basis; troubleshoot, repair or replace non-functioning meters.

• Maintain well houses, booster stations, and grounds.

• Operate a variety of hand tools and small power equipment, such as jack hammer, compressor, compaction machine, tapping machine, pipe saw, chain saw, hole hog, metal detector, four wheeler, vacuum trailer/truck, backhoe and service truck etc. efficiently and safely.

• Uses hand shovel and pick to complete fine grading or bedding of pipe; operates thawing machine to free frozen pipes and restore water service; operates service truck, light and heavy equipment to accomplish required tasks.

• Operates pick-up or light truck to transport personnel, materials, or equipment to and from job site.

• Perform installation and repair of water service connections and water lines, water mains and fire hydrants.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

(General)

• Graduation from high school, or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Willing to put in overtime when asked.

• Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and follow instructions.

• Ability to work effectively with City employees and the public.

• Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Idaho driver's license.

• Must reside within a 30 minute response time to the City of Rexburg.

(Specific)

• Shall obtain Class I Water Distribution License test within two (2) years of the hire date. Failure to do so may result in termination.

• Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of construction or plumbing.

• Dump truck, loader, forklift or backhoe experience, pump knowledge, electrical knowledge, electrical motor knowledge, and backflow prevention skills are advantageous to the job.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMETNS:

Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting (moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally moving up to 80 pounds). Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performing required job functions. Frequent exposure to changing weather conditions. Employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee frequently works in precarious places and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk from moving traffic. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking. Daily local travel required in normal course of job performance.
