The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. About the job:

In this role, the incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of security. Provides supervision to the Assistant Watch Commander(s) to ensure a safe and secure environment for youth and staff. Ensures all written documentation is complete and accurate.

Core responsibilities include and are not limited to: drafting, reviewing, implementing, and regularly evaluating policies, procedures, and Post Orders consistent with facility needs, managing duty rosters, and continually assessing available personnel before shift begins to ensure that priority posts are covered, as required by the Post Audit and policies and procedures, conducting daily inspections to detect possible security breaches and providing appropriate oral and/or written instructions and monitoring subordinate staff implementation of daily activities to ensure schedules are accurately maintained within specified timeframes and follow security related policies and procedures.

Must complete the Department of Juvenile Justice's mandated training and certifications.

As a requirement for employment, the chosen candidate for this position must be able to commit to an initial basic skills training, which is a three-week academy held at the Virginia Public Safety Training Center in Hanover, Virginia. The training program will consist of classroom academic instruction, skill-based classes, practical application, and scenario-based sessions. The basic skills training is typically scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of correctional security and administrative practices, principles, techniques, and coordination with other units within a secure residential setting. Considerable experience planning, directing and coordinating numerous security staff to maintain security related functions on a daily basis.

Demonstrated ability to work independently; effectively communicate orally and in writing; prepare and review records and reports. Ability to implement security functions and to coordinate with multi-disciplinary team members. Skilled in conflict resolution and crisis intervention. Considerable knowledge of supervisory and management techniques, performance management, employee development, and security procedures.

Additional Considerations

Progressively responsible corrections or law enforcement experience, part of which must have been at a supervisory level.
