GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Assists in the operation of wastewater treatment plants.

This is a fluid position, meaning there is a career path in this position that has an established criterion that outlines advancement opportunities. Upon you gaining experience and the furthering of education and/or gaining of certifications, advancement is readily available.

The official name for this position will be:

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator A,

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator B,

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator C, or

Wastewater Treatment Plant Apprentice

(The position is determined by the licensure held (if any).)

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Assists in monitoring, adjusting and recording data from gauges, meters, control panel and equipment to learn proper chemical treatment, pressures and flow rates of the wastewater system.

  • Assists in extracting samples and performing routine laboratory tests and analyses.

  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints, providing information or referral.

  • Maintains timely accurate records concerning treatment plant activities and conditions.

  • Controls transfer and volume of waste from tanks.

  • Replaces chlorine cylinders and regulates flow rates.

  • Assists in inspection, cleaning and monitoring of mechanical equipment in the treatment plant.

  • Assists in performing troubleshooting on process equipment.

  • Performs janitorial, facility and grounds maintenance duties.

  • Operates deck mowers and weed eaters.

  • Operates farm tractors, bush hogs, discs, and harrows.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator A:

Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by five (5) years' experience in wastewater operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and/or Certifications: A Class "A" Wastewater Operator certificate issued by the State of Florida is required.

Requires a valid driver license. Class "A" Commercial Driver License is preferred.

Hourly Pay Range: $28.84 - $31.72

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator B:

Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by three (3) years' experience with wastewater operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and/or Certifications: A Class "B" Wastewater Operator certificate issued by the State of Florida required.

Requires a valid driver license. Class "A" Commercial Driver License is preferred.

Hourly Pay Range: $25.42 - $27.96

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator C:

Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by one (1) year of experience with wastewater operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and/or Certifications: A Class 'C' Wastewater Operator certificate issued by the State of Florida required.

Requires a valid driver license. Class "A" Commercial Driver License is preferred.

Hourly Pay Range: $24.00 - $26.40

Wastewater Treatment Plant Apprentice:

Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude is preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Must obtain a Class 'C' Wastewater Operator certificate issued by the State of Florida within two (2) years of hire.

Requires a valid driver license. Class "A" Commercial Driver License is preferred.

Hourly Pay Range: $16.52 - $18.17

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate a variety of hand-held and electrical equipment and tools.

Must be able to exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 50 to 100 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Requires the ability to perform manual labor and remain on feet for extended periods of time.

Working environment is consistent with a typical water treatment plant and the potential exposure risks. Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, climbing, etc., and working in confined spaces. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English.

Must be able to speak with clarity, and to articulate information to others. Requires the ability to read and interpret a variety of policy and procedure manuals, and technical terminology regarding processing operations, equipment and machinery maintenance and meter/gauge interpretation.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations; to perform manual labor and machine operations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide; may require the ability to calculate decimals and percentages, compute ratio and proportion.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions.

Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
