This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution and is assigned to the maintenance section of a medium custody correctional facility to include management of a minimum custody facility which is managed within the scope of the larger institution. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the ORC (Operator-in-charge) and is responsible for maintaining and repairing the machines and equipment used to process and distribute water to include sample, measure and monitor water and wastewater effluent quality of two wastewater treatment lagoons and wetlands consistent with permit requirements and best management practices.

Position will read, interpret, and adjust meters and gauges to make sure that plant equipment and processes are working properly; control chemical-feeding devices, take samples of the water or wastewater; perform chemical and biological laboratory analyses and adjust the amounts of chemical, such as chlorine, in the water. Position in this class may control all of the machinery, perform tests, keep records, and handle and store chemicals, and ensure monthly monitoring limits are met in accordance with Department of Environmental Management permits. The ORC of an respective DPS wastewater treatment system must hold the appropriate license of the same grade or higher than the grade of the wastewater treatment system or combination of systems. These systems are classified as Collection Systems II and the ORC must hold a current Class II Certification provided by the NC Water Pollution Control Systems Operators Certification Commission.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • General knowledge of chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical process and transformation that they undergo which includes usages of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, and production.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) Diploma and three (3) years of experience in wastewater treatment operations and maintenance, which includes making prescribed chemical and bacteriological analysis of water/wastewater; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirement Work of some positions in this classification may require employee to possess or obtain C-Well, spray irrigation and subsurface certifications within 24 months and/or obtain & maintain Pesticide Applicator certification within 24 months of hire
