Position Overview

The Water Treatment Plant Operator reports to the Facility Engineer and has primary responsibility for operating and maintaining the plant's waste water pretreatment process in a safe and efficient manner.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain plant's waste water pretreatment process in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Follows, without exception, all work instructions and safety rules, including the use of all PPE and safety gear. Reinforces the instructions and rules with peers.

  • Contributes to the general housekeeping of the entire plant area.

  • Practices safety in all actions, including start up-shut down & lockout / tag out procedures for all responsibilities.

  • Perform analytical tests to ensure efficient operation of the equipment, in compliance with the plant's environmental permits and regulations.

  • Operate the filtration equipment, including chemical flocculation, precoating, filtration, cake disposal, and washdown/cleanup.

  • Maintains process equipment and area in a clean and safe condition, including daily cleanup and minor mechanical maintenance.

  • Requisition process chemicals and supplies for the treatment process in a timely manner.

  • Ensure that the waste water treatment process is operated on a schedule which provides for maximum plant productivity.

  • Performs other general plant maintenance or operation tasks assigned by the Facilities Engineer.

  • Perform daily chemical checks on plant equipment (boiler, cooling tower, etc.)

  • Maintain log of chemical data, usage, and activities.

  • Manage PM activities for safety systems (fire extinguishers, fire doors, foam deluge system, etc.)

  • Recommends process and equipment improvements which will enhance the performance of the waste treatment process.

  • Perform storm water sampling and testing.

  • Occasionally assist Controls Technician and Mechanic in their duties as necessary.

  • Receive training from Controls Technician and Mechanic to assist in plant maintenance.

  • Provides misc. support to Maintenance Operations (i.e., calibration assistance, training, etc.)

  • Enters preventative maintenance and repair data into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) currently MP2.

  • Ensures compliance with Quality Systems.

  • Completes documentation (i.e., work orders, schematics, panel drawings, project reports, etc.)

  • Must be able to work overtime if required including the possibility to be called in when necessary.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma (or GED).

  • Minimum 3 years of experience operating chemical process equipment, including performing and/or assisting with routine mechanical maintenance and Q/C testing.

  • Working knowledge of PCs, operating software, and software applications.

  • Understanding of chemical processes and equipment, including instrumentation.

Preferred Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Ability to maintain good documentation

  • Ability to perform with a minimal amount of supervision

  • 2 year Associate's Degree, Technical Licensure, successful completion of college or high school chemistry course(s).

  • Forklift Certified

  • Good safety and attendance record

  • Other maintenance experience, including controls, electronics, and mechanical

  • Familiarity with CMMS, preventive and predictive maintenance.

  • Pipefitting and related skills

  • Strong mechanical and electrical backgrounds

  • Computer experience

  • PLC experience with programming and troubleshooting skills.

  • Machining skills

  • Welding certification and/or experience

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this position the employee is regularly required to stand.

  • The employee is frequently required to walk, climb stairs, use hands to remove or lift boxes, stretch and reach with arms extended, and stoop.

  • The employee must, regularly, lift and / or move up to 50 pounds, alone, and occasionally lift and / or move more than 100 pounds, with assistance.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, and geographic location.

The salary for this role is $28 - $32/hr.
