Waste Reduction and Recycling Coordinator

The Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus maintains a robust waste reduction and recycling program that includes compost and recycling across the entire campus, a surplus furniture and office supply reuse and donation program, and a Zero Waste Events program.

We are seeking a Waste Reduction and Recycling Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating the programs and services on the Homewood Campus in order to achieve JHU's waste reduction and diversion commitments.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with appropriate departments to ensure vehicles are maintained, work orders are submitted, and vehicle paperwork is up to date and on file.

  • Receive all recycling work orders via the Maximo work order system, communicate with campus clients, delegate tasks and close out work orders.

  • Manage the Hop Reuse Hub, our surplus furniture reuse program, including overseeing and tracking the collection, inventory, distribution, donation and disposal of furniture and equipment, as well as, maintaining a safe workspace.

  • Manage the Zero Waste Events program including receiving, scheduling, and billing event set ups via the Maximo work order system; communicating with clients to determine the type and quantity of bins needed; and coordinating with additional staff including Events & Scheduling, Custodial Services and Grounds.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify opportunities to improve existing programs and add new programs to continuously improve waste reduction and diversion, including the Office of Sustainability, Housing and Dining.

  • Build a strong system of accountability for performance between the Custodial Supervisors, Custodians, and the Materials Handlers to achieve the highest level of quality and consistency across the campus.

  • Coordinate with the Office of Sustainability to promote and cross-market Homewood Recycling programs.

  • Provide back up to Waste Reduction and Recycling Manager as needed including receiving, responding to and assigning recycling requests and vendor service calls.

  • Supervise student employees including providing direction and training to staff and managing time reporting.

  • Support Homewood Recycling's various social media platforms.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibility

  • The scope of responsibility includes but is not limited to academic buildings on the Homewood Campus and may be asked to help outside of the academic community of buildings.

Decision Making

  • Reports to the Waste Reduction and Recycling Manager but carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision.

  • Understands the vision and priorities of the waste program to make decisions and establish work protocols for operations.

Communication

  • Communicates clearly and regularly with Custodial team, campus clients and departmental partners.

  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a variety of audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED required.

  • One year of related experience required.

  • Must be computer literate.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups both inside and outside the department.

  • Must have a valid Maryland Driver's License.

Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Business, Marketing, Public Administration, or a related field.

  • Significant coursework in the sustainability or sustainable materials management field.

  • Two years of experience managing a solid waste and recycling program in a higher education setting.

  • Ability to drive a manual/stick shift vehicle.
