The Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) is an AmeriCorps program that supports young adults (ages 18-25) and military veterans as they jumpstart their careers in the environmental field.

We support more than 350 AmeriCorps members and experienced staff statewide who restore critical habitat, build recreational trails, and respond to local and national disasters. All members earn a biweekly living allowance and an AmeriCorps Education Award once they successfully complete a term. For the 2023-2024 season, members will earn a living allowance of $1,406* issued twice a month ($2,812 per month, before taxes). *Members with positions based in King, Snohomish, Clark, and Kitsap counties are eligible for a location-based elevated living allowance of $1,530 issued twice a month ($3,060 per month, before taxes). Benefits for all members include health insurance, access to the Member Assistance Program (accessible and quality mental health services), and three weeks of paid, professional training.

Most of our AmeriCorps positions are 11-month field-crew positions where members serve on a crew of five, led by a WCC crew supervisor. We offer limited nine-month and three-month positions in spring and summer. Member Duties : Two crews serve with WA DNR throughout Blanchard Mountain, Cypress Island, Morning Star Natural Area, and Walker Valley ORV Park. The crews meet at the DNR office in Sedro-Woolley and will likely spike about 30% of the term.

Projects include trail maintenance and construction, such as installing erosion control measures, improving trail tread, decommissioning unsanctioned trails, removing hazard trees, brushing trail corridor, and rerouting sections of trail. These crews will likely backcountry spike (camp) for 3-6 weeks in the summer in Morningstar NRCA to complete remote bridge installations and other trail construction and improvement projects in the backcountry. Crew members develop skills in trail planning and design, project management and leadership, bridge installation, erosion control, GPS use, rigging, dry stone masonry, excavator use, chainsaw use, small engine maintenance, and backcountry camping and cooking.
