General Summary

Experienced and cross-trained capable of effectively performing multiple functions in the distribution center. Demonstrates the ability to learn and develop distribution skill sets of increasing complexity, including returns to vendor, shipping clerk and yard driver. Assignments may vary day-to-day based on business need. Effectively operates a High-Low Picker Truck, Stand-Up Forklift, and Sit-Down Forklift, including Reach Truck. May provide guidance or basic instruction to other warehouse employees. Performs work under general supervision.

Essential Job Functions

Must effectively perform twenty-six (26) of the twenty-seven (27) essential functions identified below according to warehouse guidelines.

  • High-Low Picker Truck
  • Effectively utilize a Radio Frequency Scanner (RF) to receive lines for order picking. Safely operate high-low picker truck through warehouse aisles to locate correct order items according to RF instructions. Navigate both wide and narrow aisles and utilize picker truck at heights up to 20 feet daily. Scan item location with RF and manually remove item from racks and place on pallet.
  • Stand-Up Forklift
  • Effectively utilize RF Scanner to receive lines for order picking. Safely operate a stand-up forklift through high traffic warehouse aisles (and outside, depending upon location) to locate correct order items according to RF instructions. Pick items and/or retrieve pallets in racks or bulk stacks at heights up to 15 feet daily.
  • Sit-Down Forklift
  • Effectively utilize RF Scanner to receive lines for order picking. Safely operate a sit-down forklift through high traffic warehouse aisles (and outside, depending upon location) to locate correct order items according to RF instructions. Pick items and/or retrieve pallets in racks or bulk stacks at heights up to 15 feet daily.
  • Reach Truck Forklift
  • Effectively utilize RF Scanner to receive lines for order picking. Safely operate reach truck forklift through high traffic warehouse aisles to locate correct order items according to RF instructions. Pick items and/or retrieve pallets in double deep racks at heights up to 20 feet or bulk stacks up to 15 feet high daily.
  • Load Consolidation
  • Consolidate items from multiple pallets onto one pallet to create a stable shipping pallet according to warehouse guidelines. Manually lift and stack items in a neat and organized manner. Inspect items for deterioration and damage, report to supervisor.
  • Seed & Crop Protectant
  • Safely operate High-Low Picker Truck, Stand-Up Forklift, Sit-Down Forklift, and Reach Truck to pick items and pallets in the Seed and Crop Protectant areas of the warehouse, as assigned through the RF Scanner. Pick items and pallets in racks up to 20 feet in height, and bulk stacks up to 15 feet high daily.
  • Mixed Pallet Put-Away
  • Safely operate a High-Low Picker Truck to heights up to 20 feet daily. Navigate both wide and narrow aisles. Manually lift items off of a pallet and place on shelves or pallets in the rack area. Stack and store items in the appropriate areas neatly and efficiently.

Effectively utilize RF scanner.

  • Bird Seed Cross Docking (Louisville, KY location only)
  • Safely operate a forklift to off-load pallets on an outside carrier's truck and reload them onto a UPS trailer.
  • Full Pallet Put-Away
  • Safely operate High-Low Picker Truck, Stand Up Forklift, Sit Down Forklift, and Reach Truck in high traffic areas inside the warehouse (and outside, depending upon location) moving full pallets of product to proper storage locations. May require putting product in drive-through racks, double-deep racks, and single-deep racks up to 20 feet high and bulk stacks up to 15 feet high. Stack and store items in the appropriate areas neatly and efficiently. Effectively utilize RF scanner.
  • Hand Unload
  • Manually stack down pallets of mixed items. Separate items on to other pallets according to warehouse procedures to allow for counting and receiving. Inspect items for deterioration and damage, report to supervisor.
  • Full Pallet Unload
  • Safely operate a forklift in high traffic areas inside the warehouse to unload full pallets of product off an incoming truck or trailer.
  • UPS/CPU Picking
  • Safely operate High-Low Picker Truck, Stand-Up Forklift, Sit-Down Forklift, and Reach Truck in high traffic areas inside the warehouse (and outside, depending upon location) picking orders as assigned through the RF Scanner. Orders shipped UPS/CPU can cross all pick zones requiring effective operation of all motorized equipment.
  • UPS Packing
  • Complete the invoicing of the picked orders. Manually pack merchandise into boxes, ensuring items are secure, for shipment by UPS small package. Complete the labeling and manifest for shipment.
  • Movement/Return Put-Away
  • Safely operate High-Low Picker Truck, Stand-Up Forklift, Sit-Down Forklift, and Reach Truck in high traffic areas inside the warehouse (and outside, depending upon location) to move inventory from one location to another and/or place returned items back in stock at appropriate location neatly and efficiently.
  • Loader (Pallet)
  • Safely operate a Stand-Up and/or Sit-Down Forklift loading pallets onto trailers for delivery. Strictly follow warehouse procedures for loading to ensure safety and accuracy of deliveries.
  • Loader (Hand)
  • Safely load large bulky items by hand onto outbound loads. May also require unloading palletized items onto the floor of a trailer.
  • Order Runner, Towline (Cloverdale, VA location only)
  • Safely operate a Stand-Up and/or Sit-Down Forklift to pull pallets off of moving carts and stage them in the correct area of the loading dock for shipment.
  • Packing Room Coordinator
  • Complete paperwork for all orders shipped UPS small package or LTL. Process packing list, shipping labels manifest and contact LTL carrier (depending on location).
  • Receiving
  • Effectively apply knowledge and understanding of receiving process and documentation requirements when signing for inbound shipments. Carefully review and verify freight bills and packing lists. Inspect products and report damage or errors to supervisor. Utilize handheld RF Scanner to receive product.
  • Wrapper
  • Effectively operate pallet shrink wrap machine and create paperwork for outbound shipments.
  • Crane Operator (Westfield, MA location only) - Operate Stand-Up Forklift to access automated storage and retrieval system. Effectively utilize the E1 Inventory System and Storage Retrieval System, trouble shoot system issues to ensure optimum results. Maintain automated inventory records.

  • Load Verification

  • Effectively utilize handheld RF Scanner to verify accuracy of staged pallet inventory to ensure proper billing.
  • Stage Checker/Ship Confirm
  • Effectively utilize handheld RF Scanner to ensure accuracy and correct placement of staged pallet. Confirm pallets for shipping once staging is checked to initiate the billing process for each shipment.
  • Customer Return
  • Process returned items from retail stores for credit. Verify reason for return and contact retail store manager to discuss discrepancies as necessary. Utilize proper equipment to return good/undamaged merchandise back to appropriate storage location.
  • Return to Vendor
  • Work closely with corporate office to process returns to vendors. Pull product from stock utilizing proper equipment, bill off inventory and prepare for shipment.
  • Shipping Coordinator
  • Complete all paperwork for outbound shipments, including billing for pallets and Haz-Mat Bill of Ladings. Deliver completed paperwork to a designated area for drivers to pick up. (Cloverdale, VA location only

  • Provide alternate pick locations for order pickers as necessary.)

  • Yard Driver
  • Safely operate the yard truck (switcher) to put loaded and empty trailers in the doors and remove loaded and empty trailers from the doors and stage them in the yard. Check the yard daily to take inventory of loaded and empty trailers, provide trailer inventory list to the Shipping and Receiving Supervisors.

Additional essential job functions required :

  • Complete and maintain written and electronic reports, logs, and other related documents accurately and in a timely manner according to warehouse procedures. Effectively utilize computer systems as necessary.

  • Continuously communicate with co-workers and supervisors about current warehousing assignments. Work together as a team to maximize efficiency, ensure safety, and meet customer requirements. Show courtesy to all co-workers, drivers, visitors, and others.

  • Demonstrate initiative to develop new distribution skills. Participate in training opportunities offered by Southern States to increase familiarity with facility and learn procedures for performing additional operations.

  • Maintain clean and orderly work area by keeping tools and equipment in proper places and all materials off the floor. Properly dispose of waste material. Be proactive with cleaning efforts as facility may receive non-company personnel. Follow all requirements of Housekeeping Plan.

  • Perform daily forklift inspections according to warehouse guidelines. Report maintenance needs of forklift and other equipment to supervisor. May assist with maintenance of equipment as needed.

  • Work safely as to not cause harm to yourself, co-workers, equipment, or inventory. Comply with OSHA regulations, Southern States Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, work rules and policies.

  • Perform all other job functions as assigned.

Requires a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Requires (1) year of previous work experience in a warehouse or distribution environment operating a high-low picker truck, stand-up forklift, sit-down forklift, and/or reach truck, as well as other industrial machinery. Previous Southern States work experience a plus.

Requirements

  • Operational knowledge of distribution center procedures for various operations including: picking, shipping, receiving, put-away, verification, and returns

  • Able to effectively operate high-low picker truck, stand-up forklift, sit-down forklift, and/or reach truck; hand truck, pallet jack, and other industrial equipment. Cloverdale, VA only

  • Must demonstrate ability to effectively maneuver forklifts to load and unload pallets from a moving towline.
  • Able to apply logic and understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form

  • Able to learn, understand and follow safety, quality control and operating procedures at all times

  • Able to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate percentages using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals

  • Able to complete paperwork in a legible, organized, and timely manner

  • Attention to detail

  • Able to speak, read, write the English language in a proficient manner

  • Able to work in a fast paced team environment

  • Able to meet production demand and deadlines determined by production schedule

  • Able to work extended hours to meet business demands

Work Environment

Continuously performs essential job functions indoors in an environment that is not climate controlled and experiences temperature and humidity swings. Depending upon location, essential job functions are occasionally performed outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.

Frequently exposed to hazards including:

  • Moving mechanical parts and vehicles

  • Operating a high-low picker truck and/or forklift at heights up to 20 feet

  • Noise levels where hearing protection is optional per PPE Plan

  • Vibrations, dust, odors, fumes and hazardous chemicals associated with warehousing and distribution of feed, fertilizer, seed, and other related products.

Depending upon location, may work an eight (8) hour shift five (5) days a week or a ten (10) hour shift four (4) days a week. Overtime may be required. Must be able to work an alternate shift, schedule or weekend as determined by business need. Ability to report to work in adverse weather conditions is required.

Physical Activities & Requirements

While performing the essential job functions of this position, also required to:

  • Continuously balance, bend, and stack; drive motorized equipment; manual dexterity (fingers and hands) for equipment controls and merchandise; reach with arms and hands; stand on concrete surface and while driving motorized picker truck and forklift; twist back and neck; utilize feet and hands in repetitive motion while driving motorized equipment. Pull, push, lift, carry 10-55 pounds unassisted.

  • Frequently crouch and kneel. Pull, push, lift, carry 55-100 pounds.

  • Occasionally climb, sit, stoop and walk. Pull, push, lift, carry over 100 pounds, may be assisted.

Must be able to hear equipment sounds, warehouse pages, co-workers and radio. Must be able to speak to co-workers regarding production and safety. Specific vision abilities required by this position include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Tools & Equipment

Hard hat, steel toed shoes required. Ability to utilize the following equipment and tools: high-low picker truck, stand-up forklift, sit-down forklift, reach truck, pallet jack, hand truck, RF scanner, stretch wrap machine, scale, gloves, safety knife, writing instrument, reports and logs, computer, printer, copier, scanner and fax machine.
