The Ward Clerk is responsible for performing general secretarial and clerical duties in a well-organized manner. His/her presence must be complimentary in creating a healing environment for patients and staff.

The Monitor Technician is responsible for the monitoring and interpretation of cardiac rhythms for patients on continuous bedside or telemetry monitoring. This individual may perform 12 lead EKG's on patients from adult to geriatric.


High school graduate or equivalency certification. At least 1 year Ward Clerk experience. Familiarity with patient care, medications, medical procedures and medical terminology. Function and organization of nursing unit. Basic Arrhythmia Certification required within 90 days of employment. Strong communication skills. Observe patient confidentiality. Adhere to policies and procedures and emergency protocols.


  • Serves as receptionist on the unit by answering telephones, taking/relaying messages, placing/answering calls or pages, greeting/directing visitors, physicians and staff.

  • Transcribes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner. Performs computer order entry procedures, processes requisitions, notifies nursing staff appropriately re: new orders.

  • Orders/maintains supplies of forms and other clerical supplies.

  • Assists nursing personnel and performs clerical responsibilities related to admission, transfer and discharge of patients on the unit.

  • Notifies appropriate personnel re: admissions, discharges, transfers and deaths on the unit.

  • Completes unit census, outpatient charges and other reports as assigned.

  • Reports observations and problems regarding patients to the appropriate persons in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrates accountability by accepting responsibility for own actions and decisions.

  • Demonstrates an ability to set appropriate priorities and ability to respond to changes in workload.

  • Responds to emergency patient situations or internal/external disasters following established protocols, remaining calm and informing appropriate persons.

  • Orders services from ancillary departments as needed e.g. dietary, environmental services, lab, x ray, cardiology, RT, PT, Central Supply, Engineering, etc.

  • Demonstrates commitment to smooth unit operation by planning and organizing clerical aspects and following up on duties left from the previous shift to assure effective 24 hour unit operation.

  • When performing 12 lead EKG's or placing monitoring leads, maintains the patient's dignity and ensures patient rights. (MT only)

  • Explains basics of monitoring or EKG procedures ordered to gain patient's cooperation, allay apprehension and promote compliance; varies explanations based on patient's age (MT only)

  • Demonstrates sound basic knowledge of cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation. Runs, posts strips, notifies staff promptly for rhythm changes (MT only)

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of monitoring equipment and performs routine troubleshooting (MT only)

  • Documents vital signs, weights and other patient data accurately and in a timely manner on the medical record as directed by licensed staff and according to unit protocols. Updates assignment sheets and worksheets.

  • Performs 12 lead EKG's and initiates bedside or telemetry monitoring as directed by licensed nurses according to policy/procedure and physician's order (MT only)

  • Cleans / checks monitoring cables, lead wires, telemetry units after use and stores properly. Maintains adequate monitoring supplies on unit (MT only)

  • Demonstrates safe use of equipment, including but not limited to computers, printers, addressographys, copy machines and for monitor technicians, physiologic monitors and 12 lead EKG machines.

Essential function includes informing nurses and appropriate members of the health care team of important physiological and cardiac changes. Qualifications * Education: High School diploma or GED. Completion of an approved arrhythmia or EKG interpretation class. * Licensing: EKG certification/registration as required by individual states or clients. * Training and experience: Unless otherwise indicated, one year of current experience within the last three years in a comparable job classification required. * Maintenance of current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for HealthCare workers or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification. * Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information. * Complies with Infection Control, Standard Precautions and OSHA standards for the healthcare professional. * Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves) as needed. * Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members. * Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner. * Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English. * Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology. * Health Requirements— In good health and able to work without restrictions as evidenced by Health Statement. * Compliance with Supplemental Health Care's pre-assignment and medical requirements including: current TB screen, or Chest X-ray and questionnaire if proof of positive TB screen; Measles/Mumps/Rubella immunizations or titers indicating immunity; Hepatitis B Information or Waiver; and any additional state or facility medical requirements. * Physical Demands-Stooping, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds; constant/repetitive standing; requires normal, correctable vision and hearing, and the ability to accurately discern color as necessary to perform job functions. Duties and Responsibilities * Responsible for assisting providers with cardiac monitoring, therapeutic measures, and procedures related to cardiac monitoring. * Monitor and record physiological measurements including obtaining six second strip as indicated by patient condition. * Responsible for identification of patient arrhythmias, abnormalities or significant changes from baseline and reporting on the condition of patient/client to the appropriate supervisor or other health care team members. * Coordinate and assist with care as directed. * Care and maintenance of cardiac equipment. * Documents and interprets patient's heart rhythm and rate by utilizing telemetry recordings. * Responsible for performing tasks that are within the scope of his/her educational preparation, knowledge, and permitted by the policies and procedures of Supplemental Health Care, and other local, state, and federal guidelines; and the policies of the facility requesting the services. * Receive, screen and coordinate telephone calls from patients and healthcare providers. * Responsible for having a broad understanding of the services provided by Supplemental Health Care. * Communicate information clearly to patients, family and staff.
