Global Markets Corporate Banking

Manages a portfolio of hedge fund clients in support of Global Markets activities with BMO Capital Markets. Facilitates the underwriting of complex trading and credit structures, including prime brokerage, derivatives, and securities financing transactions, and partners with internal stakeholder groups to manage the risk of the portfolio while maintaining strong client relationships. This role will leverage deep understanding of trading products, margin methodologies, and hedge fund strategies to formulate credit recommendations and carry out portfolio management activities as part of the first line of defense.

Client & Business:

  • Collaborates with BMO Global Markets partners to cover clients and prospects and to identify/ deliver creative, timely solutions. Recognizes opportunities to cross-sell and support Global Markets business to grow share of clients' wallet.

  • Builds positive client relationships through deep/comprehensive understanding of client needs and alignment of our products/services, while considering the risk to the bank.

  • Identifies and acts on the opportunities of meaningful revenue, cost reduction or capital optimization opportunities.

Risk Management:

  • Management of a portfolio of trading and credit facilities for non-bank financial institutions including but not limited to hedge funds, private equity funds, family offices and other alternative fund structures.

  • Conducts counterparty due diligence, prepare initial, annual, and interim credit applications which includes detailed counterparty analysis to assess credit-worthiness of existing or prospect clients.

  • Provides recommendations to obtain internal credit approvals on facility and deal structure, client risk ratings, collateral and margin. Balances the Bank's risk appetite with the client needs in making recommendations.

  • Active continuous monitoring across a broad range of metrics and indicators and management of counterparty exposure in line with developing market conditions, counterparty risk profile, internal risk appetite, industry and regulatory changes. Follow up on trading violations and limit excesses.

  • Review and recommend credit terms (e.g. ATEs) in negotiations of legal trading agreements (ISDA/CSA, GMRA, MSFTA, PB LUA, etc.)

  • Considers risk, internal controls and compliance as part of day-to-day accountabilities and adheres to policies and procedures.

Efficiency & Effectiveness:

  • Fosters and supports coordination amongst internal stakeholders such as Global Markets, Credit Risk, Market Risk, Legal, and AML.

  • Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Acts as a positive change agent to drive improved efficiency and effectiveness. Identifies and delivers on opportunities to improve the efficient processes and client experience; brings in partners where appropriate. Implements changes in response to shifting trends.

  • Development, testing and delivering solutions relating to assigned projects and goals as applicable.

  • Grows/elevates the BMO and BMO Capital Market brand with a commitment to and presence in the community.

  • Participate in the training and mentoring of junior staff.

  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.


  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in corporate banking, capital markets trading products, credit, and/or structuring financial transactions. This should include some experience in a corporate lending environment or dealing with professionally managed financial institutions.

  • Undergraduate degree has focal areas of finance, economics, or accounting preferred with high academic achievement.

  • MBA, CFA or equivalent experience preferred in financial services, accounting, or related fields.

  • Excellent knowledge of hedge fund industry, structures and investment strategies.

  • Excellent knowledge of Global Markets products and services, and related risk (credit, market, operational, legal/compliance, etc.).

  • Excellent knowledge of the organizational lending and portfolio management policies and objectives.
