The purpose of the position is to bring both industry and legal technical expertise in the management of our largest and/or most complex claim matters. This will be a safeguarding / oversight role, working closely with the respective claim offices. Provide technical and strategic guidance for high exposure and complex claims, including coverage and/or bad faith litigation, being managed by in-house claim departments of multiple operating units. Assure that exposures are timely recognized, resolution plans are well formulated and executed. Effectively communicate with external business partners as well as colleagues in underwriting, actuarial and executive management.


  • Superior knowledge of all technical aspects of claims handling/management including investigation, coverage analysis, litigation management, evaluation, reserving and negotiation

  • Inform other functional departments (underwriting, actuarial, finance)of positive/negative conditions noted during investigations which may impact company results

  • Engage with reinsurance partners on claim issues and industry trends

  • Drive favorable loss cost results by influencing, planning and guidance on individual claims.

  • Provides ongoing analysis of technical material (i.e. case law, regulations) to determine the impact on claim operations and provides the necessary guidance and assistance to the claim office(s).


  • Serve as a mentor in the training and development of less experienced staff when necessary

  • Strong interpersonal communication, presentation, consultative, and negotiation skills

  • Work professionally and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization

  • Provide input and guidance on individual claim matters

  • Work independently and as part of a team

  • Demonstrate good organization (detail oriented) and prioritization skills; meet deadlines, multitask

  • Demonstrate sound judgment; strong decision making and problem solving skills

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically is required


EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Bachelor's Degree; Law Degree (JD)

COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE: Windows; Microsoft Office; Outlook;

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 15+ years of experience in Claims, particularly professional liability, and/or private law practice

What you'll do on a typical day: * Enhance trade compliance by developing key global policies, procedures, controls, communications strategies and employee training * Provide legal support to colleagues on global trade-related litigation, compliance investigations and voluntary disclosures * Support oversight of periodic assessments and audits to guarantee compliance with applicable global trade laws and company policies * Prepare required summaries and work with various business units to resolve compliance matters, as well as government filings when necessary * Advise on complex legal regulatory questions, identify common and conflicting legal issues across the company and contribute to high-level policy decision-making What you need to succeed at XPO: At a minimum, you'll need: * Juris Doctorate degree from a nationally accredited law school * 5 years of legal experience in export law and economic sanctions, as well as providing legal counsel on global trade compliance issues * Availability to travel domestically and internationally It'd be great if you also have: * In-house experience in logistics or global supply chain * Strong fluency in Microsoft Office applications, as well as various research and legal databases * Excellent written and verbal communications skills * Effective organizational and leadership skills; use a variety of interpersonal styles and communication methods to effectively adapt to new work structures, processes or cultures * Strong aptitude for understanding and analyzing large volumes of information from multiple sources, as well as the ability to produce unambiguous, comprehensive and accurate interpretations * Strong presentation and negotiation skills to deal effectively with individuals and groups within and outside the organization * High degree of motivation with the capacity to work with minimal supervision, while building effective and collaborative work relationships both internally and externally * Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and time demands with a high level of urgency, personal integrity, energy and stamina Be part of something big.
