Job Description
Sompo International is seeking a Vice President, Product Counsel to support our Product Development team in our Morristown, NJ office.
As Product Counsel, you will provide legal support to the commercial property and casualty underwriting teams, who underwrite property, casualty, and related insurance products. You will advise underwriters and management on coverage and legal matters and draft policy forms for new and existing products.
Job Responsibilities:
Advise underwriters regarding commercial property and casualty policy terms, coverage issues, and related legal issues
Draft commercial property and casualty policy forms and endorsements
Collaborate with underwriters in the negotiation of product coverage terms
Review legal documents such as non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and warranty statements
Partner with functional areas across the organization, including underwriting, claims, actuarial, marketing, operations, and regulatory compliance in developing new products
Provide product-related regulatory compliance support
Identify opportunities for, and contribute to, continual improvement of team processes
Other duties as determined by management
Qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree, admitted to at least one state bar, and eligibility for in-house bar admission in New Jersey required
Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience as in-house counsel at an insurance company, or combination of in-house and law firm experience
Exceptional legal writing, attention to detail, and analytical abilities - candidates may be asked to provide a writing sample
Experience drafting commercial property and casualty policy forms and endorsements preferred
Knowledge of ISO, AAIS, and NCCI products preferred
Ability to effectively convey information and ideas in a clear and concise manner
Regulatory experience relating to product filings and state required policy provisions is a plus
Proven ability to make sound decisions under uncertainty and with limited information
Strong organizational and time management skills
