Job Summary

Officer position responsible for providing overall management and direction for employee relations. Directs the development and implementation of strategic and operational objectives for employee relations in accordance with the company's strategic plans to protect the company and minimize the costs of complex risks and exposures that may arise due to CNA's status as an employer.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Drives implementation of strategic and operational objectives with significant impact on the short-term success of employee relations and moderate impact on the long-term success of the company.

  • Analyzes complex employee relations issues and communicates with CNA employees leadership legal human resource generalists and external employee representatives as needed. Works to achieve solution with best possible business results gains consensus as necessary and moves issues to resolution.

  • Composes and/or reviews various corporate policies employee communications documents and strategies to ensure compliance appropriateness and value.

  • Conducts strategic reviews of current and possible future legal and other exposures as it relates to employee relations. Ensures appropriate positioning of CNA in relation to compliance risk and business outcome.

  • Leads corporate-wide compliance training initiatives for the human resources community.

Reporting Relationship

Typically SVP and above

Skills Knowledge and Abilities

  • Mastery of employment and contract law. Understanding of the critical human resources functions.

  • Advanced communication skills which are critical to building consensus across area of influence (external and/or internal relationships) team and/or matrix environment.

  • Strong leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.

  • Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving significant problems within scope of responsibility.

  • Senior level knowledge of the insurance industry its products and services.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in related field or equivalent.

  • J.D. with a license to practice law required.

  • Typically a minimum of twelve years of related business HR and legal experience with seven years management experience.

  • Applicable certifications preferred.

The Director of Employee Relations leads the organization's efforts to build a positive culture of accountability, recognition and reward.
