Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae loan programs and guides to ensure compliance for loans delivered to the agencies

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the underwriting for a variety of agency asset types including: Small Loans, Conventional loans, Dedicated Student Housing, Manufactured Housing, Moderate Rehabilitation properties, Near-stab properties, and "Green" transactions

  • Provide quality control and attention to detail for underwriting packages prepared for internal approval, loan committee, and delivered to the agencies with the critical ability to identify and mitigate risk

  • Provide quality control on the trade term sheet, commitments and Ebinder for Fannie Mae transactions

  • Provide quality control on Index locks and commitments for Fannie Mae transactions

  • Manage, oversee, train and develop members of the underwriting team in accordance with the Company's career-pathing goals

  • Manage the underwriting timeline to meet targeted dates for rate lock and closing by identifying challenges and resolving issues early in the process

  • Identify and solve problems is they arise to foster high through-put for loans in underwriting.

  • Review loan quote narratives and sizers with the ability to identify required waiver and to identify and mitigate risks. Calibrate with the Chief Underwriter in elevating risk issues as appropriate

  • Develop strong working relationships with loan officers aligned with the underwriting team

  • Provide assistance to loan officers in the upfront structuring of transactions during the quoting process

  • Develop and manage critical business relationships, which include cultivating favorable relationships with internal and external contacts (i.e. third party vendors, closers outside counsel, agency credit counterparts, etc.)

  • Anticipate and resolve issues for customers and team members

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of agency income and expense underwriting, valuation, mortgage credit analysis, exit strategy analysis, etc. income and expenses

  • Review third-party for acceptability and agency compliance including Appraisals, Engineering Reports, Seismic Reports, Phase I Environmental Assessments, High Performance Building reports, etc.

  • Perform functions outlined in the W&D's Fannie Mae Quality Control Plan

  • Work closely with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae team members on resolving deal specific issues in a timely manner

  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors degree (Business, Economics, Finance or Real Estate preferred) with a minimum of 8-10 years' work experience in commercial real estate finance and related industries with strong exposure to multifamily and extensive knowledge of the Fannie Mae DUS and Freddie Mac loan programs.
  • MBA highly preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in multifamily underwriting. This includes but would not be limited to a strong working knowledge of the key players in the industry, the issues and trends facing the industry, the ability to identify and underwrite the key credit, sponsor related risks, and the ability to evaluate alternative risks carefully when structuring a transaction, and a demonstrated knowledge of property operations

  • Previous experience with bridge lending desirable

  • Extensive multifamily experience across a wide range of financial and product executions including fixed and variable rate transactions

  • Demonstrated leadership with evidence of increasing responsibility throughout career history and at least 5 years of direct supervisory responsibility

  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management

  • Demonstrated commitment to innovation and change and willingness to take initiative to accomplish change

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute solutions to complex issues and transactions.

  • Extensive multifamily experience across a wide range of financial and product executions including fixed and variable rate transactions
