Essential Job Functions:

  • Manage and provide leadership to direct reports with respect to investigating, reserving, expense management, resolving claims, and overall claims handling in accordance with Best Practices.

  • Reinforce processes, goals, and procedures that exemplify professionalism, integrity, and superior claim handling.

  • Align with Senior Casualty Leadership securing and conveying Chubb's corporate and claims business philosophy. Make recommendations to Senior Casualty Leadership for appropriate coverage, reserve, and settlement authority to supervisors and examiners, as commensurate with their respective abilities and reevaluate as warranted.

  • Reinforce and support the integration of all Chubb claims employees by modeling and promoting a culture of positivity and inclusion. Seek feedback from those in the reporting structure and promptly address concerns and/or behaviors, elevating issues to the Senior Casualty Leadership as needed.

  • Monitor the work product for each of the direct reports (supervisors, claim representatives, etc.) for compliance with requisite standards. This includes actively reviewing file submissions and requests for assistance pertaining to complex coverage issues and large exposure cases above the authority of each direct report. This also includes ongoing review of best practice compliance results, together with the implementation of action plans for sustained and/or improved compliance.

  • With regard to severe or complex coverage cases, ensure timely and effective recognition, escalation, and committee presentation to senior management. Develop proficient claims presentation skills for self, direct reports and others for successful participation in the committee process and other presentation opportunities.

  • Manage customer complaints and formulate resolution strategies in a proactive, professional and responsive manner, elevating to Senior Casualty Leadership as needed. Identify and reinforce lessons learned arising out of any complaint.

  • Work in a collaborative fashion and develop strong business relationships with a wide array of Chubb partners and peers (such as underwriting and general counsel counterparts) thus fostering the ability to exert influence when necessary.

  • Ensure that direct reports understand the importance of communicating to producers and underwriters to provide them with time sensitive information that will assist in their business goals and consistently deliver that information. Identify all specific reporting mechanisms as needed to ensure compliance (e.g. LLN/CLR, EWS notices) and work to provide uniformity in reporting as appropriate.

  • Actively evaluate staff performance to identify high performing employees, areas for training and development and work with training department to deliver appropriate support. Work within and across regions to share training opportunities as appropriate.

  • Acts as an effective role model in terms of attitude, teamwork and the ability to get the job done. Seek feedback to enhance own performance as a leader and create an environment that motivates others and builds morale.

  • If needed, negotiate severe and complex claims and litigated matters above the monetary and coverage authority of direct reports.

Financial:

  • Establish clear goals at the individual level that tie to each department metric and support Casualty Tower objectives. Implement training and identify effective measurements necessary to drive positive results.

  • Work with direct reports in gathering and providing information to assist Claim Leader in completion of monthly/ quarterly reports; financial/inventory metrics. Ensure quality, timeliness and accuracy of information through communication of expectations and active review and closely evaluate anomalies, providing commentary and analysis to Senior Casualty Leadership as requested.

Qualifications:

  • 10 yrs. plus of claims/legal experience required. Marine experience a plus.

  • At least 5 Yrs. of Management experience

  • CPCU/ Law degree is preferred

  • Advanced Presentation and Communication skills

This casualty role is focused on the handling of personal and commercial Auto Liability, General Liability & Excess/Umbrella Liability claims. This role requires an individual to be accountable for the independent handling and disposition of claims including but not limited to investigation, coverage determination, reserving, litigation management, negotiation, settlement, and trial strategy. This position may require some travel as you will represent the company at meetings with management and our internal and external business partners. You will also be expected to participate in mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences and trials as appropriate. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include but are not limited to: * Day to day handling of an inventory of approximately 135 personal and/or commercial liability claims, largely comprised of claims involving moderate to high exposures and/or coverage issues, across multiple lines of business. * Independently carry out claim handling activities including, but not limited to, coverage analysis, investigation of liability and damages, litigation and expense management, evaluate claims for reserve and settlement, execute settlement strategy and proactively negotiate settlements, attend mediations/arbitrations, and ensure appropriate file documentation. * Review and analyze contracts for risk transfer potential. * Proper file documentation and diary management. * Provide superior claim handling and customer service. * Adhere to Best Practices Guidelines. * Vendor and expert management subject to established guidelines and procedures. * Demonstrate and implement effective defense, resolution and claim strategies. * Attend settlement conferences, arbitrations and mediations as appropriate. * Adhere to individual authority grants, all statutory and regulatory requirements, fair claim practices and local compliance requirements, including examiner licensing. * Automobile (AL) and General Liability (GL) with experience in AL Bodily Injury and GL Products & Premises Liability. * Strong background and demonstrated ability in handling claims involving the New York Labor Law and NY Insurance Law 3420(d). * Strong background and demonstrated ability in dealing with significant coverage matters. * An understanding of the tenants of insurance and legal principles. * Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication and negotiation skills. * An ability to work independently and assimilate learning materials on many different subjects from various sources. * Strong time management, litigation management and multi-tasking skills. * Working knowledge of industry best practices and procedures. * Excellent interpersonal communication and negotiation skills; and an ability to deal with internal and external customers and business partners in a professional manner. * Ability to make prompt, intelligent decisions based upon detailed analysis of complex issues. * Demonstrate strong relational skills particularly in adverse or high-pressure situations. * A law degree is not required. * Write coverage position letters.
