About the Role

The VP of Brand, Marketing, and Communications will own the design and development of 1871's marcom strategy. This person will lead a team to implement holistic and forward-thinking marketing and communications plans that will position 1871 as an industry leader and expand our share of voice. He or she will serve as a key player in telling the story of 1871, its member companies, and the role of our community in the technology ecosystem -- in Chicago and beyond.


  • Leadership and people growth: provide vision, direction, and mentorship in order to develop the team, invigorate creative thinking, and produce exceptional outcomes

  • Drive brand awareness and customer acquisition across all channels, including via brand partnerships, experiential marketing, and emerging technologies

  • Provide critical support in developing thought leadership strategies for 1871, its executives, and member companies

  • Drive alignment between 1871's internal departments, member companies, and other constituents in order to generate buzz and visibility

  • Oversee content strategy and implementation across all digital properties

  • Oversee PR strategy and media activities

  • Source and facilitate media partnerships

  • Oversee website and SEO strategy

  • Oversee all creative assets, online and off (includes video, photo, graphic design, and copy)

  • Design and implement email communications

  • Design and implement marketing/sales automation processes, including drip campaigns, workflow logic, and list segmentation

  • Oversee creation of marketing collateral and promotional items

  • Oversee design and production of the Annual Report

  • Schedule photography, videography, and social media coverage for events and other activities

  • Build and manage marketing budget

  • Manage all projects across the communications team, which includes leading meetings, goal setting, and task tracking

Required Skills

  • Adobe Photoshop or similar

  • CRM experience (e.g. HubSpot, Salesforce)

  • Wordpress (or other CMS experience)

  • Marketing Automation (e.g. HubSpot, Marketo, Pardot)

  • Social Media Automation (e.g. Hootsuite, Sprout Social)

  • Google Analytics experience preferred

  • Some HTML/CSS preferred

  • Some SEO/SEM preferred

This function requires an articulate, highly organized, self-motivated and resourceful individual who is comfortable multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: * Work with the CB Marketing team and our business partners to write, edit and produce a variety of external communications for numerous areas of the business, including brochures, sales collateral, presentations, video storyboards, talking points, direct mail campaigns, advertising copy, email, web and social media copy, as well as thought leadership. * Provide tactical support for the projects and programs led by the Commercial Banking Marketing team, including project management and assistance with a variety of external-facing projects. * Support the broader Content Team in execution of the Commercial Banking Content Strategy, including assisting in content initiatives such as competitive reviews, leveraging social listening and trend reports, reviewing metrics on existing content programs, suggesting new ideas for content, etc. * Work closely with Marketing Project Managers to audit, develop, edit, maintain and manage self-service and templated marketing materials. * Liaise with the various functional areas of the Commercial Banking Marketing team to ensure projects are completed in a timely and efficient manner. * Emulate the style and voice of the Commercial Banking business in all written communications, adhering to the business's style guide and assisting internal communications colleagues with updating and maintaining it. * Help manage freelancers and agency partners in delivery of copy that meets business goals while staying within Commercial Banking style guidelines. * Serve as a brand ambassador for Commercial Banking and offer support and guidance for our external presence to clients and client-facing employees. * Special projects as assigned. Qualifications: Required: * Bachelor's degree in Marketing Communications or Journalism. * Three to five years of experience in marketing or communications. * Exceptional writing, editing and verbal communications skills. * Proven ability to develop engaging and effective copy for diverse B2B audiences around a wide range of topics. * Ability to interview subject matter experts with technical expertise, drawing out relevant information and translating into a compelling story for our clients and prospects. * Strong project management skills and proactive attention to detail. * Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member. * Ability to consistently meet or beat aggressive deadlines while proactively identifying potential issues and effectively communicating project statuses to a wide range of stakeholders. * Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment while working well with people all around the country in a variety of roles, job functions and departments, and with a wide range of personalities, work styles and processes. Preferred: * Experience in the financial services industry. * B2B communications experience. * Agency experience is a plus, but is not required. * Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) Style. * Familiarity with project management/workflow software and systems (particularly Workfront, Basecamp, Sharepoint and/or marketing automation platforms [including Eloqua, but especially Marketo]).
