In short, this leader will be accountable for providing vision and strategic leadership to ensure medical affairs excellence for these areas within the US. This Vice President will be the US Medical Affairs TA expert on the external HCP environment, emerging therapeutic trends, collection and characterization of external insights. S/he will be accountable for the development of USMA specific, commercially-aligned medical affairs strategic plans to define the value proposition of our medicines, including operationalizing regional evidence generation as appropriate for each specific TA, as well as appropriate external communication of data to external HCPs. S/he will ensure that medical affairs activities are conducted with utmost integrity.
The Vice President will understand how to stay at the forefront of an evolving medical organization, demonstrate strong leadership skills, and effectively work with USMA leadership to drive change. The Vice President will have the strategic acuity and political nuance in balancing best practices for the medical organization and the overall corporate objectives. S/he will be instrumental in designing and executing on a disease area strategy that will evolve and enhance the medical affairs organization. With a rich portfolio of products and a promising pipeline, this executive will drive pivotal portfolios recognized as major contributors to GSK's present and future growth.

As the senior physician for the Respiratory area in the US market, the Vice President is the medical partner to the US Business Unit Head and Global Franchise Medical Head, along with colleagues in clinical R&D.
S/he will ensure the TA medical voice of the customer and market is understood, synthesized across multiple customer segments into medical insights, and clearly translated into actions that enable appropriate use of our medicines for US. S/he will also ensure that medical insights are communicated regularly to key partners (Global Franchise, Development & Discovery, and Commercial) in a strategic, action-oriented way. The opportunity to impact the business is significant.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of US Medical Affairs, this role will be highly visible. The Vice President will set strategic goals for a large cross functional team, inclusive of the field organization of MSLs, HOLs, and potentially multiple medical product teams. S/he will serve as a key strategic partner to colleagues in US commercial, global medical, clinical development and regulatory. S/he will play a key role in establishing culture as well as strategy and operational implementation of this strategy.
This executive will ensure the highest scientific integrity across the therapeutic areas. In addition, s/he will stay abreast of current product issues. S/he will make recommendations and provide medical expertise on a wide range of topics. Broad perspective is needed across the portfolio to share learnings and best practices as well as to deliver medicines of value to the patient.
This leader must ensure medical talent and leadership have a deep understanding of the customer, competitive environment and the marketplace. S/he will ensure alignment and partnership with Safety and Regulatory, Compliance and Medical Governance, as well as the legal environment within the US for the respective therapeutic areas.
This executive will sit on the US Medical Affair's Leadership team (MALT), as well as represent USMA on both the global franchise medical team and appropriate commercial leadership teams. S/he will be expected to participate in setting the direction for GSK for the relevant therapeutic areas within the US, proactively identifying and acting on local market pressures and trends in patient care and treatment.
As a key leader in US Medical Affairs, the Vice President will also be expected to contribute to the management of USMA. Indeed, GSK's deepened focus on the US market gives USMA a clear stature across GSK, deepening the ability of this role to drive impact across GSK.
Responsible for Medical Governance and oversight of Medical Affairs Activities for Respiratory Medicines in the United States. This person is accountable for ensuring Medical Governance excellence through oversight across these therapeutic areas. This executive will partner with compliance to provide strategic leadership to ensure regulatory compliance for all medical affairs activities.
Serve as the senior physician for the US for the therapeutic area, as well as serve as the medical partner and voice to the US Commercial Business Unit Vice President for the therapeutic areas. This executive will be the voice of the US to the Global Medical Franchise Head and R&D Therapeutic Head. S/he will also align fully with Safety and Regulatory ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations.
Oversee regional Phase IIIb/IV clinical plans managed in North America for the respective therapeutic areas providing a consolidated regional perspective into long-term global clinical and value evidence strategies.
Advocate for medical resources/data needed to support successful commercialization of US products
Lead the development and execution of globally and commercially aligned medical plans for all medicines and/or vaccines within the respective therapeutic areas. S/he is accountable for medical plan development and strategic deployment of all medical resources assigned to those therapeutic areas.
Drive evidence generation (clinical and value based), synthesis and translation for TA-level, above-molecule or cross-brand plans. S/he will engage in collaborative clinical research projects to support US needs (interventional, observational and modelling).
Drive therapeutic area health policy and advocacy strategy as agreed upon with global franchise and commercial partners. Ensure that a strategy is in place to facilitate timely publication in respected medical journals or presented at well-recognized congresses.
Lead, oversee and manage talent across the respective therapeutic areas for the US including:
Recruiting, hiring, developing and managing US Medical Affairs Leads (USMALs), Medical Directors, Scientific Affairs Leads, and Clinical Scientists (direct reports) and actively participate and approve all TA talent who indirectly reports to the position (MSLs, USHO and MI)
Providing strategic oversight and product direction to the field based Medical teams such as Medical Science and Health Outcomes Liaisons (dotted line reports)
Ensure all talent in the respective therapeutic area have the needed medical expertise and maintain a high level of therapeutic and scientific expertise and achieve the highest level of capability to become industry leaders and deliver the pipeline excellently
Deploy medical resources (including MSL, HOL) to achieve the approved strategic plan
Lead the scientific and external engagement strategy for the therapeutic areas within NAMA (in collaboration with the Global Franchise). S/he will review and approve requests to provide proactive education on GSK products or disease states to US HCPs, determining medical need for education and set educational goals for the respective therapeutic areas. In specific, s/he will:
Engage with US health care providers, payers, integrated delivery networks and other customers to obtain medical insights, understand therapeutic and customer trends;
Engage in appropriate scientific dialog and debate with external parties;
Serve as the US public medical spokesperson on the respective therapeutic areas to outside parties to deliver clear medical and scientific data.
Develop and maintain a deep understanding of US market, customers and patient voices, the competitive environment and future healthcare trends.
Lead the strategic synthesis, interpretation and translation of US customers/market voice (payers, HCPs, and patients) and regularly deliver medical insights (via a report) and actions to key medical partners (Commercial, Global Franchise, and Development) to inform global and local opportunities, strategies, and solutions for customers.
Enable a performance driven culture with clear metrics. Ensure business improvement is embedded into the organization with accountability for metrics to measure and communicate TA Medical Affairs activities. This will in turn demonstrate value and achievements.
Be recognized as a trusted partner with commercial and all medical partners providing medical guidance and input and aligning and supporting promotional engagement strategy.
M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or M.D/MBA from an accredited and recognized medical school, ideally with relevant medical practice and patient care experience.
Domain expertise relevant to leading medical affairs across Respiratory Medicines.
This position requires a deep medical and scientific expertise to be viewed as credible by external experts and to provide sound medical judgement.
Preferred Level of Education: Board Certification or equivalent is preferred
Broad experience in Respiratory science is required
Commercialization experience with solid knowledge of drug development, safety, regulatory/ market access and reimbursement requirements demonstrating deep understanding of the US market.
Significant specialty pharmaceutical and US medical affairs experience
Able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
