PEOPLE FIRST - Conduct fair, accurate, secure, and transparent elections to increase public participation and confidence.

The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Vote Center Representativesto assist in the upcoming November 2024 General Election. The Elections Division is a fast-paced environment; this is an excellent opportunity to work with a group of dynamic, well-organized, and highly efficient individuals committed to the democratic process.

We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for the temporary, full-time positions of Vote Center Representatives to be hired for the following duties:

  • Use an iPad tablet to verify voter eligibility.

  • Provide voters with information about the current election.

  • Guide voters on use of electronic ballot marking devices.

  • Operate office equipment including Windows Laptops, printers, and iPad tablets.

  • Assist voters with registering to vote and casting their ballot.

  • Issue ballots using Windows laptops.

  • Maintain accurate files and records.

  • Secure Election materials and supplies to maintain the integrity of the election.

Most of our positions for this role will be assigned to our 4-Day Vote Centers. To be considered for this role, you MUST be available to work at least the full assignment below:

  • 2 days of onboarding and training (dates in September and October, flexible subject to availability).

  • Set-up: 4 hours on October 31 or November 1, to be assigned on an individual basis.

  • Early Voting: November 2-4, 8 AM - 6 PM each day.

  • Election Day: November 5, 6 AM - 11 PM (in some cases, the shift might last longer to accommodate voters).

Approximately 1 in 8 of our positions will work at an 11-Day Vote Center, following the schedule below:

  • 2 days of onboarding and training (dates in September and October, flexible subject to availability).

  • Set-up: 4 hours on October 25.

  • Early Voting: October 26 - November 4, 8 AM - 6 PM weekdays AND weekends.

  • Election Day: November 5, 6 AM - 11 PM (in some cases, the shift might last longer to accommodate voters).

Approximately 1 in 16 of our positions will work at a 30-Day Vote Center, following the schedule below:

  • 2 days of onboarding and training (dates in September, flexible subject to availability).

  • Set-up: 4 hours on October 4.

  • Early Voting: October 7 - October 25, 8 AM - 6 PM weekdays.

  • Early Voting: October 26 - November 4, 8 AM - 6 PM weekdays AND weekends.

  • Election Day: November 5, 6 AM - 11 PM (in some cases, the shift might last longer to accommodate voters).

When you are interviewed, you will be asked your preference, so please review your schedule beforehand.

The Vote Center Support is classified as an Office Assistant I.The hourly wage for this position starts at $23.89.

NOTE:This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Qualifications

Vote Center Representative candidates will have strong organizational abilities, computer proficiency, attention to detail, and previous knowledge of vote center procedures and the live vote center application. Good candidates will also prioritize work, learn new jobs tasks quickly, and understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Some positions may require working overtime, including long hours, weekends, evenings, and holidays. Any authorized time worked more than 40 hours in the workweek shall be considered overtime and shall be compensable at the rate of one and one-half (1-1/2) times the overtime worked.

Generally, extra-help employees who work on a holiday shall be compensated for such time worked at the rate of one and one-half (1 1/2) times the straight-time rate as provided in the Overtime Section of this MOU for their work group).

The selected individuals must be available for the entire employment period until the completion of their assignment.
