Plans, develops, recruits, organizes, implements, supervises, and directs activities of volunteer services program. Coordinates, reviews, produces, and assists hospital departments in developing and maintaining standardized policies and procedures to comply with TJC standards.

Plans, develops, implements, evaluates, and coordinates patient and family education services for hospital. Assures hospital is TJC compliant with standards related to patient and family education programs.

Essential Responsibilities:

The primary job duties this position is responsible for achieving are listed in order of importance.

Assesses, receives, and evaluates organizational need for volunteers. Orients all areas in proper use of volunteer services.

Evaluates job functions, workload, systems, workflow, and information and recommends and/or implements improvements to optimize services of department. Develops job descriptions.

Develops strategies and programs to recruit volunteers to meet the needs of the organization and volunteers.

Plans, implements, and monitors specific goals and objectives for volunteer program that meets Maui Health System guidelines.

Interviews, selects, and processes work assignments. Trains volunteers for work or assists department with providing effective training.

Monitors volunteer placement. Supervises office volunteer staff. Ensures adequate Information Desk coverage.

Coordinates holiday luncheons and events to recognize volunteers.

Develops and conducts surveys and meets with various department supervisors to evaluate effectiveness of volunteer(s) utilized.

Writes verification of service and performance letters for volunteers and general correspondence to volunteers and community.

Assesses and identifies patient, resident, family and community health education needs. Develops programs and systems to provide quality education to patients, residents, family and community members.

Participates in defining education priorities. Leads goal setting and maintenance of health and patient, resident, family and community education services.

Develops policies and protocols and coordinates, develops, implements, reviews, approves, and revises education materials. Serves as process owner for proper Maui Health System branding of educational materials.

Maintains records and data. Ensures quality monitoring and improvement of hospital-wide patient, resident, family and community education. Prepares reports on results.

Coordinates, develops, implements, reviews, approves, and revises hospital Closed Circuit Television System education programming and schedules.

Collaborates with Continuing Care, Health Education Department and hospital administration to develop and maintain referral mechanism to education programs and services.

Ensures hospital complies with Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Standards (CLAS). Coordinates planning, implementing, and evaluating hospital interpretive services program.

Ensures hospital complies with TJC and other regulatory standards related to patient, resident, family and community education and volunteer services. Reports compliance issues to TJC functional leadership.

Provides and coordinates educational and professional development activities as needed to meet the learning needs of staff who offer patient, resident, family and community education.

Serves as resource for hospital signage and bulletins to ensure proper branding.

Serves as a resource for patient and resident rights and responsibilities.

Assists with other appropriate education and orientation programs as assigned.

Prepares annual budget for department and monitors all significant variances from budget.

Develops and implements, plans, and obtains supplies for various projects.

Communicates goals, objectives, accountabilities, priorities, and authority parameters to assigned staff.

Basic Qualifications:


Minimum three (3) years of experience in healthcare administration OR patient/resident/family/community education OR hospital volunteer administration.


Bachelor's degree OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

License, Certification, Registration


Additional Requirements:

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in oral communication, written communication, customer service, project coordination, leadership, mentoring, systems thinking, conflict resolution, influence with physicians, department heads, and supervisors, problem solving, quality management, team building, and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and database PC applications.

Coordinates all professional aspects of the service with Medical Liaison and/or Administration. Essential Responsibilities: Directs rehabilitation services (inpatient and outpatient) and programs to deliver high quality, cost effective care to achieve service excellence. Develops programs to meet current and future needs. Reviews service performance, effects changes as needed to improve services and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Develops goals and objectives, establishes and implements policies and procedures for operations. Hires, trains and manages clinical and non-clinical personnel. Develops standards of behavioral performance and clinical competencies. Evaluates personnel based on established standards and competencies. Creates, analyzes, and maintains reports and statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes. Develops and recommends service operating and capital budgets, and ensures that the services operate within the allocated funds. Has authority for budgetary expenditures. Develops rehabilitation services to meet the needs of MHS patient population. Manages resources to meet customer needs. Develops and implements performance improvement programs. Monitors and assesses programs and reports to Quality stakeholders as requested. Establishes and maintains communications with multiple departments locally and regionally. Develops relationships with academic programs, the community, and other groups. Provides direct patient care services as needed. Ensures ongoing professional development for self, clinical staff, support staff, and student affiliates. Demonstrates behavior consistent with the criteria for professional practice. MHS conducts compensation reviews of positions on a routine basis. At any time, reserves the right reevaluate and change job descriptions, or to change such positions from salaried to hourly pay status. Such changes are generally implemented only after notice is given to affected employees. Basic Qualifications: Experience Minimum eight (8) years of experience in a clinical rehabilitation services setting required. Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience required. Minimum one (1) year of experience in program development, staffing, including disciplinary action and termination, and budgeting required. Education Graduate of an accredited physical or occupational therapy or speech language pathologist curriculum with a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree or foreign-trained equivalent. License, Certification, Registration Licensure to practice physical or occupational therapy or speech language pathology by the State of California Hawaii by date of hire. Must have a Nat'l Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain an NPI, prior to employment start date. BLS required. Additional Requirements: Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment. Preferred Qualifications: One (1) year of previous management experience in a union environment.
