Job Description Summary:

The OSMP Volunteer Crew Lead role provides support and leadership to implement Volunteer Services goals in accordance with the City Charter for Open Space purposes and to implement the department's strategic plan. Volunteer Crew Leads are responsible for field and project management, skills development, training implementation, administrative duties, and logistical support of their contract crews as well as one-day volunteer projects (ODVP).

The Volunteer Services Crew Lead is expected to lead, support, build relationships, and coordinate with twelve OSMP workgroups. Crew Leads are expected to learn and understand the roles and services each workgroup provides. Another key responsibility is sharing and teaching safety to contracted partnerships and volunteers under minimal supervision. This position works with the Volunteerism and Service-Learning Program Manager for Groups on OSMP project initiatives and performs other duties as required for the Volunteer, Service Learning, and Partnerships (VSLP) workgroup. This position requires the ability to work hiking on and off trail for up to 10 hours in the field per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, as well as working outside in inclement weather and in mountainous terrain.

This role oversees and supports contractors and volunteers who work to advance community connection, education and inclusion as part of city of Boulder and OSMP goals.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversees daily operations of Contract Crews and Volunteer Groups

  • Directs crews and volunteers to complete project management with over twelve different workgroups on managing invasive plants to building trail. Works closely with each work group Project Manager to assure project scope objectives are achieved.

  • Conducts daily project site meetings, upholds safety logs, communicates project goals and details to ensure safety and quality for managing contract crews and volunteer groups.

  • Leads contract crews and volunteer groups with onsite oversight to create a culture that is respectful, professional, innovative, embraces safe work practices.

  • Provides field support, training, and comprehensive performance evaluations to crew. Openly share successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth.

  • Ability to stay engaged and motivate others with the task at hand for up to eight hours at a time, especially when tasks are repetitive and physical in nature.

  • Maintain regular communication on status of projects with project managers and supervisors.

Project Planning

  • Meet weekly/biweekly to plan with Volunteer Services team on group projects and facilitate field operations on Bridge House RTW/RTWL and volunteer groups.

  • Walk-through projects with staff specialists to learn objectives and deliverables.

  • Ordering meals for volunteer groups/staff, maintaining equipment, logistics, facilitating safety trainings to groups.

  • Plans and presents safety briefing and trains resource management methodologies at projects, along with providing roving environmental education throughout the day.

  • Ensures volunteers and contract work forces are trained in safe operation of tools and equipment to be used on the project.

  • Inventory, maintain, and order tools and equipment necessary to support groups and crews, along with personal protective equipment. Train volunteer groups and contract crews in operations and maintenance of equipment.

Reporting and Communication

  • Keeps detailed records and communicates information about field operations, incident reports, group data management, safety logs, weekly reporting, administrative tasks.

  • Use volunteer management systems and software, Excel, and Microsoft Word for daily metrics/record keeping/data management for quarterly and annual reports.

Training and Mentoring Staff

  • Help facilitate, organize, and refine staff training on volunteer groups, Bridge House RTW/RTWL contract, and other contracted partnerships.

  • In a field setting, train, model, and instruct staff on how best to work with volunteer groups and the Bridge House RTW/RTWL contract.

  • Attend trainings to cope and understand the effects of transference when working with people that are experiencing homelessness and are vulnerable. Cultivate a shared language of support with team.

  • Leads with emotional intelligence.

Hiring Assistance

  • Assist with hiring of additional Volunteer Services Crew Lead.

  • Train a second Crew Lead in daily functions of the position and work collaboratively to sustain program capacity.

Other

  • Knows and complies with all policies, including safety best practices.

  • Reports and takes personal responsibility for all accidents, damage to city property, and/or policy infractions.

  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all proper safety equipment. Reports accidents, damage of city property and injuries to their supervisor.

  • Responsible for knowing and complying with city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace policies.

  • Ability to stand, walk and kneel in the performance of duties. Ability to lift 35lbs and carry tools, equipment, and supplies.

  • Ability to perform tasks in an outdoor environment under a variety of weather conditions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid drivers' license and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record, along with operating a 4x4 truck safely. You will occasionally be responsible for driving volunteers and contract crew members.

Willing to work weekends.

  • One season of experience supervising work crews completing natural resource management or working with vulnerable populations.

  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history

  • Project Management: Familiar with coordinating events or projects that involve many variables including time, people, logistics, resources, operating standards, guidelines/specifications, and responding to unexpected or additional elements. Ensuring that information is complete and accurate; and agreements are fulfilled. Attention to detail is crucial.

  • Instructing or Mentoring: Creates a safe working environment. Willing and able to work in a collaborative manner to help execute volunteer services program objectives. Demonstrates commitment to mentoring others, answering questions, and providing a safe space to learn. Ensures crews conduct work efficiently, effectively, and in a safe manner.  Anticipates unsafe circumstances and takes precautions to prevent accidents. Uses training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new concepts.

  • Leading Others with Emotional Intelligence: Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job. The ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others' concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to others. Maintains a healthy team environment and refers issues appropriately to their immediate supervisor.

Listens to concerns and is open to the ideas of colleagues. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers, with excellent customer service skills.

  • Integrity: Represent the City of Boulder and Open Space and Mountain Parks with integrity when interacting with the public and project partners.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to hike, carry tools, operate brush saws, forestry chippers on uneven terrain for extended periods of time in all weather.

  • Experience with leading volunteer groups and contract crews.

  • Experience supervising or supporting work crews completing natural resource management or land management field tasks with vulnerable populations.

  • Wilderness First Responder or First Aid & CPR Certification.

  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Openness to different and new ways of doing things; willingness to modify one's preferred way of doing things. Able to function effectively when directions or priorities change quickly.

  • Problem Solving & Decision Making: Ability to recognize needs, assess possible methods to meet needs, and act on solutions.

  • Learning Strategies: Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things, including creative, one-of-a-kind methods.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in natural sciences, resource management, education, public lands, or similar field.

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicles record

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical ability to perform tasks in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions including lifting, standing for long periods, walking on rough terrain and kneeling.

  • Work takes place in both an office setting and field setting with continuous interruptions and background noises.
