The Literacy Council of Grand Island is a community- and education-focused organization in the heart of the United States. Our mission is to teach adult learners the literacy skills necessary to communicate, grow, and thrive in our community.

We provide free instruction for more than 600 adult learners in our community, teaching English literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, digital literacy, and more, helping them reach their goals of education, employment, and self-sufficiency. We also seek to build bridges that unite our diverse community.Grand Island is the third largest city in Nebraska, an area that is rapidly growing in diversity due to job availability and low cost of living. While many financial resources get funneled to the coasts or to larger cities, there is a tremendous amount of need right here: one in every seven local residents has been designated Limited English Proficient.

Our student numbers have increased from 100 to 600 in the last five years. VISTA support will help us to improve our services and build capacity as we accommodate the growing need. This VISTA member must have a passion for the transformative power of education and for engaging volunteers to give back to their community. Activities will include raising community awareness, recruiting volunteers, developing systems for ongoing volunteer support and training, and pursuing funding to sustain these systems. This project offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team at a rapidly growing program that has a tangible impact on people's lives every day.

At LCofGI, you will help students reach their goals, help our community be a welcoming place, and help expand our volunteer support system for years to come. Come join us!
