About the Position:

The Volunteer Coordinator participates in planning, coordinating, implementing, promoting, and overseeing activities for senior volunteer programs including the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Senior Companion Program (SCP).

The City of San Bernardino is a community rich in history and cultural diversity. Influences of Native Americans, Mexican settlers, and Spanish missionaries can still be seen throughout the City today. From 1810 to the present, San Bernardino has been recognized for its scenic beauty and strategic location. Today, the City of San Bernardino serves as the county seat and is the largest city in the County of San Bernardino with a population of 222,203. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Trains, coaches, and provides guidance and direction to staff and volunteers; develops and coordinates assigned staff schedules; maintains a positive and productive work environment; provides input on staff performance evaluations.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and conducts activities to recruit, train, place, and monitor RSVP and SCP volunteers; recruits, interviews and screens volunteers; conducts pre-service orientation and training; assigns volunteers to appropriate community service agencies or clients; monitors and evaluates volunteers' work performance.
  • Seeks new placement opportunities for volunteers; introduces program to organizations and agencies that could appropriately place volunteers; receives and follows-up on client referrals for volunteer services.
  • Promotes programs and services, develops and oversees production and distribution of flyers, brochures, and other marketing materials, and facilitates program success; plans, organizes, and coordinates annual recognition event and ongoing recognition opportunities.
  • Produces, updates, maintains, and submits a variety of program reports; oversees the collection and tabulation of volunteers' monthly time sheets and other records.
  • Complies with grant administration and reporting requirements; researches, recommends, and identifies funding opportunities; participates in developing and drafting funding proposals in support of RSVP and SCP goals and objectives.
  • Serves as a program liaison, advisor, and resource person; provides courteous and prompt customer service to program volunteers, general public, and other City and community contacts; mediates conflicts between volunteers and client contacts.
  • Receives referrals for volunteer services and completes care plans for clients; reviews and monitors client expectations and requirements for volunteer workers to ensure appropriateness and compliance with applicable program and City goals, objectives, policies, and rules.
  • Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, methods and processes used in the planning, administration, implementation, and promotion of a large-scale volunteer program.
  • City policies and procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Federal, state, and local laws, and regulations.
  • Basic methods and practices of public outreach and involvement.
  • Principles and practices of sound business communication and marketing.
  • Uses and operations of a computer and database and other standard software to access.
  • Senior adult demographics, concerns, and interests; local seniors' community resources and communication vehicles.
  • Basic principles, practices, and techniques of effective employee supervision and training.

Skill in:

  • Coordinating, overseeing, and supervising a program that recruits, trains, and places a large number of volunteers in public agencies and private settings.
  • Participating in organizing, coordinating, evaluating, and conducting effective marketing, training and recognition activities related to senior volunteer programs (RSVP and SCP).
  • Recruiting and interviewing applicants for placement as senior volunteers.
  • Assessing needs of senior-age clients and match client needs with volunteer resources.
  • Making presentations to various civic groups and organizations.
  • Eliciting community and organizational support for volunteer programs.
  • Operating a computer using word processing, database, and business software and standard office equipment.
  • Relating effectively to older adults from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Preparing clear, concise, and comprehensive correspondence and reports.
  • Organizing, setting priorities, and exercising sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Dealing effectively with diverse members of the community.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Providing customer service.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma, or G.E.D. 

AND

Two (2) years of progressively responsible recreational or community services program coordination experience or a combination of training and experience.

Experience with the administration of senior program services or the recruitment and assignment of a large number of volunteers is highly desirable. Bilingual skills preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

A valid California driver's license is required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

Employees work under typical office conditions, and the noise level is usually quiet. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to manipulate, handle, feel, or operate standard office equipment, reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

CITY BENEFITS:

The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes: 

  • Health Insurance- Monthly contribution for health, dental and vision premiums: $738.00 Employee Only, $1,450.00 Employee plus one, or $1,939.00 Employee plus Family.  A "Health Insurance Waiver Stipend" of $4,000.00 every first paycheck of December for eligible employees who waive benefits. 
  • Vacation- 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually 
  • 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time. 
  • Retirement- California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members: 2% at 55 | New CALPERS members 2% at 62.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
