Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with the City of Cocoa C.I.V.I.C. Volunteer Program.

This unpaid position is of volunteer nature and the purpose is to perform general office work or other duties assigned in designated department or area of assignment under supervision. Volunteers/Interns will obtain opportunities to receive practical work experience and skill development while learning the various career areas, functions, operations, and activities of a municipal employer.

In the City of Cocoa, we strive to provide exceptional public services that meet the needs of our citizens while also enhancing the quality of life for our residents and visitors. The City of Cocoa has developed a program to better connect the public to the City through community engagement. The "Cocoa Involves Volunteers In our Community" (C.I.V.I.C.) Volunteer Program coordinates efforts to allow volunteer participation in many City departments or City sponsored events. Each Citizen of Cocoa is encouraged to invest time in the Cocoa community by becoming a volunteer to assist in short/long-term projects. The volunteer experience helps strengthen the City's resources and the knowledge of volunteers can noticeably benefit and serve our community.

How can you become a C.I.V.I.C. Program Volunteer?

  • Complete a C.I.V.I.C. Program Volunteer Application online now. When submitting your application, you may be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire depending on the volunteer assignment, location, etc.

  • Participate in the required background and reference check process. Human Resources staff will inform you when the process starts, and you may be required to provide additional information. This is an important and required part of the volunteer program, and the level of background check may depend on area of assignment.

The purpose of the internship is to provide the opportunity to gain exposure to the public sector working in a variety of HR functional areas, in specific to: Recruitment life-cycle, pre-employment assessments, talent acquisition analytics, in addition to Compensation, Benefits, Employment/Labor law, Organization and Employee Development, Worker's Compensation, Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), Employee Relations, and Diversity. The Human Resources Intern is required to exercise confidentiality, organization, initiative, and independent judgment in performance of assigned tasks. Work is reviewed through conferences, oral/written reports and evaluation of results. The Human Resources Intern must be able to communicate clearly and courteously with citizens, employees, elected officials, and representatives of internal and external organizations and agencies. The Human Resources Intern will report directly to the Human Resources Manager. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS * Creates and maintains detailed project plans and project documentation. * Conducts external research, and assists in program implementation and/or policy development. * Creates presentations in MS Office. * Assists with document imaging of personnel files and other related documents. * Assists with establishing and maintaining employment application files. * Assists with employment training activities, wellness fairs, job fairs, and other activities. * Assists with the preparation of new hire paperwork, scheduling of drug tests, post offer physicals, background checks, reference checks and other preliminary new hire processes. * Assists with the completion of employment forms, medical files, and personnel records. * Assists in the development of audits and metrics pertaining to the Human Resources functions. * Maintains copies of various documents for use by all HR Staff and employees. * Answers phones, assists in filing, and general HR Assistant duties as needed. * Provides information to other departments and the public, applying knowledge of department rules, regulations, and procedures. * Works effectively with a variety of staff, other governmental representatives, and the public; deals tactfully and courteously with the public and maintains composure in difficult and/or stressful situations. * Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Good verbal and written communication skills. * Skill in the use of a variety of computer programs, including Microsoft Office and various office equipment. * Demonstrated problem solving skills. Must be able to work independently and carry out assignments to completion with minimum instruction. * Should work well with other personnel and assist the public cooperatively and courteously. * Maintains a positive attitude and strong work ethic with a desire to learn. Excellent customer service skills required. Must exercise a high degree of confidentiality and integrity. * Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. * Ability to conduct research, analysis, and develop reports, manuals, and/or presentations based on findings. * Ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality and integrity. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent with one (1) or more years of office administration experience. Special Qualifications: Must be enrolled in a bonafide Human Resources education program requiring an internship for program completion and/or graduation. For positions requiring the operation of City vehicles, must possess a valid current Florida Driver's License, or be able to acquire one within 45 days of hire. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is generally light and may require exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and or/up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
