The Voluntary Service Assistant (Ambassador) works under the supervision of the Voluntary Service Officer receiving assignments that require application of standard procedures or special procedures that are identified and explained. The Voluntary Service Assistant works the front desk and other areas of the hospital assisting the Voluntary Service Officer ensuring Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is able to provide excellent customer service to veteran patients.

Responsibilities

The Voluntary Service Assistant's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Respond to questions from patients - provide advisory and technical assistance to patients and hospital staff, escort and transport patients; push wheelchairs and gurneys, assist with morgue runs, and assist with medical equipment.

  • Secure patient's confidence/cooperation - assist in the explanation of procedures, position patients for desired results, cushion and shield patients as appropriate.

  • Provide administrative support - utilize personal computer; handle written correspondence and telephone inquiries.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/15/2018.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-3 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Work which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position being filled; Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years above high school (transcripts required). OR,
  • Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-4 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-4. For example, an applicant who has 20 semester hours of undergraduate level education and 8 months of creditable general experience would equal 100% of the required experience for the position (33% of the education required to substitute for education and 67% of the required one year of experience). You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:

  • Practical knowledge of standard procedures in customer service and patient satisfaction in the the health administration field.

  • Knowledge of clerical practices to include the operation of a personal computer and various office automation systems.

  • Knowledge in utilizing and adjusting escort equipment when transporting patients.

  • Ability to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements:
The work is primarily physical which requires standing, walking, bending, lifting and pushing wheelchairs, gurneys and other medical equipment. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work requires heavy lifting of equipment or patients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is throughout the TVHS medical centers and involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

The Clinic Assistant provides superior customer service to clients by answering questions and assisting them through the clinic process. During the clinic, the Clinic Assistant assists Veterinarians during examinations and procedures of pets; prepare vaccines and administer according to Veterinarian instructions; make recommendations for services and products to clients based on their pet's lifestyle; collect, prepare, and label samples such as fecal and blood for outside laboratory testing; properly label and dispense medications; review paperwork with clients and process payments. Training is provided. Starting pay is $10.00/hour.
