We operate the largest residential program for formerly homeless women and children in the Sacramento region providing services 24 hours/day, 365 days/year, offering shelter, meals, childcare, and comprehensive support services, including Behavioral Health Services, Hands-on Employment Training, Career Education, and Family Services.

Position Overview

TITLE Vocational Trainer/Cook

SALARY From $20.00 To $24.00 Per Hour

CLASSIFICATION Full-Time, Non-Exempt

LOCATION On Site Only

  • Jackson Rd. Sacramento, CA

SCHEDULE Monday

  • Friday (May include nights/weekends), 12:00pm to 8:00 pm

About the Position…

The Vocational Trainer/Cook works under the supervision of the Food Services Manager to provide vocational training to the clients in the program by way of preparing and serving client meals. As vocational trainer/cook you will be responsible for supervising clients and volunteers and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen.

You'll be responsible for…

  • Preparing dinner for clients according to instructions as set forth by Food Services Manager and following all Health Codes and Regulations

  • Ensure foods are all labeled, stored and served at proper temperatures

  • Monitor all food served to clients and ensure that quality is consistently maintained

  • Regularly inspect all kitchen areas to ensure sanitary conditions and report all needed equipment repairs

  • Represent SJP in a positive and professional manner and attend special events when requested and build relationships both on and off property.

  • Promote and comply with all SJP policies and procedures

  • Immediately report all suspicious occurrences and hazardous conditions and avoid injury to self an others.

  • Always maintain the cleanliness and safety of work areas and equipment.

  • Attend all mandatory meetings as directed.

  • Perform other tasks, including cross-training, as directed.

You must have...

  • High School Diploma

  • 2 years of experience with preparing and cooking for food service.

  • Fluent in English language (spoken and written)

  • Proficient knowledge of email, copiers, fax, and internet

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite

  • An incredible passion for our mission

  • Required License/ Certifications: CA Food Handler Certificate

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The physical requirements for performing the essential functions of this position require the employee to be able to:

  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to hear and respond to simple and sometimes critical messages exchanged in noisy/high traffic areas.

  • Standing/walking up to 100% of the time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Fluency in Spanish language (spoken and written)

  • Trauma informed training

  • CA Food Service Manager's Certificate

  • Advanced knife skills

  • Catering experience. BOH and FOH

  • Desired License/ Certifications: CA Driver's License and proof of auto insurance
