Summary:

The Pharmacy Purchasing Technician performs technical support tasks to assist Staff Pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Documents information on patient profiles.

Maintains stock levels of medications and pharmaceutical supplies. Responsible for the delivery, set up, and pick up of in-home IV infusion equipment and supplies, also included are enteral feeding supplies, product, and equipment. Equipment includes but is not limited to infusion programmable pumps, enteral programmable pumps, and various mechanical infusion devices.

Acts as customer service field representative. As field rep, duties will include but are not limited to: trouble-shooting problems with pump usage, both enteral and IV, instructs patients as to proper procedures for re-ordering supplies, helps existing patients with home supply inventory, instructs patients regarding proper storage and/or use of IV medications. Provides pharmacy services to patients of all ages.

Responsibilities:

Demonstrates commitment to unsurpassed level of Customer Service.

Mixes all intravenous admixtures, intravenous piggybacks, irrigations, and TPN solutions under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist.

Assists pharmacist in interpreting and entering new physician orders received for patients into the computer.

Interprets computer generated labels and fills orders accordingly.

Date checking and cleaning of assigned areas of the pharmacy department to assure that medications are in date and the department is clean.

Answer all incoming phone calls assisting where possible and transferring when necessary to a pharmacist.

Assist in collecting and tabulating Quality Assurance statistics.

Daily cleaning of cleanroom and laminar flow hood.

Checks and records refrigeration and cleanroom temperatures daily.

Performs routine preventative maintenance of all IV and enteral infusion pumps.

Responsible for proper documentation of pump maintenance.

Monitors inventory stock levels and re-orders as necessary so as to maintain inventory at appropriate levels.

Markets VNA Infusion Pharmacy in a positive and professional manner at all times.

Acts as field representative on behalf of customers/patients, acts as problem solver.

Instructs patients on how to re-order supplies, helps patients keep track of home supply inventories, provides on the spot supply replenishment when necessary.

Troubleshoots issues with regard to IV and enteral pumps, acts as liaison between patients and pharmacists for programming issues in lieu of a visit by skilled nursing whenever possible.

Performs daily preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles.

Completes and returns daily delivery/pickup paperwork promptly and accurately; returns paperwork to the appropriate facility personnel.

Gathers/loads equipment and supplies from in-house stock as prescribed on patient delivery tickets.

Delivers equipment and supplies for patient utilization.

Contributes to organization success targets for patient satisfaction and net operating margin.

Other information:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High school Diploma or GED required.

Current Pharmacy Technician Certification from a Nationally recognized organization require.

If exceptions are made, the technician must obtain certification no later than one year after hire.

Valid Michigan driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of auto insurance required.

Pharmacy technician retail and/or hospital experience preferred, home infusion experience preferred, infusion billing experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Knowledge of pharmaceuticals by generic and trade names.

Must know the metric and apothecary systems and be able to convert from one system to the other.

Must be math proficient.

Must have knowledge of cleanroom procedure.

Must have knowledge of above or will be required to learn through PSI program or equivalent.

Operates computer systems (including typing/keyboarding skills) and other general office equipment.

Proficient in aseptic technique or will be required to learn through PSI program or equivalent.

Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing.

Works with accuracy and meets established deadlines.

Effectively follows written and verbal instructions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITION:

Ability to maintain puntual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, feeling, talking, and hearing.

Frequent near vision, midrange vision, far vision, depth perception, visual accommodation, color vision and field of vision.

Frequent lifting 0-10 lbs.

Occasional sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, reaching, handling, and tasting/smelling.

Occasional lifting 11-25 lbs.
