A Day in the Life of a Systems Engineer:

Perform systems engineering infrastructure and integration tasks related to development and systems sustainment. Responsibilities include design, documentation, project planning, communication, configuration, testing, implementation, mentoring, tuning, and level 3 systems support. The systems engineering team is a project focused group with accountability for delivering sound technical solutions while meeting project milestones for deliverables. This position requires strong technical skills as well as the ability to successfully document and communicate results to technical and non-technical staff.

Responsibilities

  • In depth knowledge on VMware ESX / vSphere / vRealize Suite / Horizon Suite / Site Recovery Manager

  • Collaborate with team members across the business to offer expertise and assistance in providing recommendations for client issues

  • Mentor system operation engineers across multiple platforms such as VMware, Windows, Linux and Storage

  • Monitor and maintain system configurations to ensure security data integrity of virtual and multiple operating system platforms

  • Familiarity with software development and network operations concepts and methodologies

  • Proven experience creating and documenting solutions to meet business needs

  • Support rapid solution implementations and customer engagements related to IT infrastructure

  • Monitoring, testing and deploying hardware/software performance and lifecycle change

  • Ensure the availability, reliability, scalability, and manageability of the infrastructure environment

  • Oversees and implements system upgrade and patching strategies

  • Initiates and implements improvements in all areas of the infrastructure environment

  • Performs system capacity analysis and planning to ensure storage management system operation and resource utilization optimization

  • Share functional expertise by effectively documenting work processes and procedures

  • Respond quickly and effectively to production issues and take responsibility for those issues through resolution

  • Proactively seek out new training initiatives and alternative ways that can expand one's functional expertise

  • Ensure test regions are available for all systems and applications to be used by system programmers and operations personnel

  • Maintain good housekeeping and a safe working environment in the Server Room and associated storage areas

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What can you bring to Meridian:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer related area is required.

  • Certification in IT related discipline is required

  • ITIL Foundations preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of four (3) to six (5) years of experience in a similar position is required

  • 3+ years of experience working with Windows Server environments

  • 3+ years of hands on experience in design and deployment of VMware and storage infrastructure

  • Experience working in medium to large data centers is required.

  • Working knowledge of storage and back-up/recovery practices and procedures

  • Working experience with Business Continuity and Disaster Recover

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the storage field

  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures related to Project Management. Specifically defining milestones, tracking progress, and reporting project status

  • In depth experience with VMware hosts, vCenter Server and VMs

  • Knowledge of Windows & Linux best practices

Skills:

  • Installation, configuration, and maintenance of storage area networks

  • Scripting ability, especially using shell, Python and PowerShell

  • Excellent troubleshooting and technical documentation skills

  • Technical documentation skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Self-driven, motivated, goal oriented and able to take full responsibility for actions

  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal & relationship-building skills

  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills

Abilities:

  • Resourceful and able to work independently with initial guidance and direction

  • Ability to leverage experience, demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in managing complex situations

  • Able to work on multiple projects/priorities in a deadline-driven environment

  • Must be able to remain calm in pressure situations and adapt quickly to change

  • Must have the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Able and willing to travel occasionally

A Day in the Life of an System Engineer - Application Security: Responsible for securing the company's data and infrastructure. Determining security needs, developing and implementing solutions, and enforcing application security best practices are essential skills for this position. This individual will make recommendations as well as implement and manage controls and development efforts around internal and external facing company applications. Responsibilities * Assists in technical security assessments, penetration testing, and vulnerability assessments on client, mobile, and web applications * Implementing, monitoring, managing, and researching application security solutions * Responsible for providing timely guidance to rapid paced full spectrum development * Develop and execute application security testing plans to ensure configuration changes, upgrades, and hot fixes are thoroughly tested and documented in the test environment before being implemented in production * Build and maintain test, development, QA, and production environments to support the application life cycle * Develop and execute plans for monitoring of all applications in the existing production environment * Perform regular risk assessments and make recommendations for continued improvement of client, mobile, and web applications * Participate in the successful transition of services to support staff * Work with regulatory companies to meet industry compliance * Research and report industry trends in application security, to ensure all applications meet standards for security and performance * Provide best practice training to other members of the team to ensure continuity in application design and security * Comfortability working alongside a fast paced System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Qualifications Education: * Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in related field is required * Possess certifications including Security certifications such as Comptia Security+, GIAC, CISSP, DSOE Experience: * A minimum of two years' experience in data protection and application security * Experience with the design, planning, and implementation of security solutions required * Experience with Restful API security is preferred * Experience with client/server, web/mobile application architecture is preferred * Experience in one or more of the following programming language is preferred: AngularJS, .Net, Java, Python, PowerShell, NodeJS, or Native Javascript * Experience with OWASP Top 10 is preferred * Experience coding, compiling, decompiling, and/or penetration testing applications is preferred * Experience with 3-tier application security and best practices is preferred Knowledge: * Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures as they relate to building high performance and secure applications * Working knowledge of security best practices * Understanding of HTTP, SSL, IPSEC, LDAP, L2TP, TLS, DNS, SSH, SNMP, transport encryption technologies for VPN and secure web site access Skills: * Vulnerability management, remediation, and proactive discovery * Excellent troubleshooting and technical documentation skills * Ethical hacking skills are a plus * Skilled in verbal and written communications Abilities: * Ability to analyze information from multiple sources (including people) and apply it to the operational environment in developing and maintaining the security posture of the company's applications * Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in decision making * Ability to collaborate with other IT Professionals to achieve common project goals * Able to work on multiple projects/priorities in a deadline-driven environment * Must be able to remain calm in pressure situations and adapt quickly to change * Able and willing to travel occasionally Equal Opportunity Employer #MSTR Meridian Detroit MI
