Position Summary

Disability Support Services at Green River College works with students with disabilities to provide classroom and testing accommodations.

The DSS Team is hiring for a part-time hourly position as a visual interpreter/reader/scribe/note taker, specifically for math classes. The hourly rate is $17.

This position is in-person only on the main Green River College Auburn Campus (12401 SE 320th Street, Auburn, WA). This position is also expected to last 6-8 months; however, the position may extend based on student needs. Minimum hours per week is estimated to be ~6 hours in a classroom and anywhere from 2-8 hours outside of the classroom, which is dependent on the student's availability and needs.

The maximum amount of hours per week is 16.

Visual interpreting conveys vital information through verbal communication. Interpreters audibly describe, read, explain a variety of content. This includes describing pictures, graphs and charts, gestures, and use textiles to help describe certain concepts and classroom materials and activities.

A reader will read instructions verbatim, classroom handouts, tests (test instructions, questions, answers), and other materials presented in class. A scribe will write verbatim a student's answers on classroom handouts, worksheets, tests, etc. A note taker will take detailed notes during lectures, providing descriptions for pictures, charts, graphs, etc.

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

Position Responsibilities

  • Clearly and accurately present visual information audibly

  • Convey and record information accurately

  • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality

  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt to uncertainties or changing priorities and various types situations and classroom content

  • Maintain strict privacy standards, confidentiality, and FERPA

  • Work closely with DSS Staff and eLearning to monitor classroom content accessibility, troubleshoot inaccessible activities, content, homework, etc.

  • Communicate regularly and efficiently with DSS Staff

  • Follow the Disability Support Service's and Green River College's Code of Conduct

  • Keep an accurate, up-to-date record of working hours and submitting time sheets promptly

  • Working with students in a classroom setting, the Placement & Testing Center, and potentially other areas on campus when students require out-of-class accessibility assistance

  • Respectfully conducting duties in the classroom, the Placement & Testing Center, and other on-campus areas

Qualifications

  • Fluent command of the English language in written and conversational form

  • Ability to effectively communicate and change communication methods to best suit the situation and student's learning styles

  • Basic computer skills such as file maintenance, document uploading, downloading documents, etc.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Canvas, Outlook Email. May need to become familiar with JAWS screen reader

  • Ability to follow directions and communicate with staff

  • Punctuality is a must!

Supplemental Information

This is a part-time hourly position with a non-permenant temporary employment status.

If hired, you will receive in-person paid training with DSS Staff, as well as paid online training. There are also opportunities to attend various staff events and training, both in-person and virtually.

This position is part of a bargaining unit subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
