GENERAL SUMMARY

The Visual Arts and Graphic Design programs are committed to educating its racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse student population.  We currently enroll 11,597 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations. 36.4% of CCD's students are Hispanic, 11% are African-American, 5.7% are Asian American, 0.9% are Native American, 0.1% are Pacific Islander, 31.1% are White, 4.2% are multiracial. The Community College of Denver has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community.  The successful candidate will be a well-rounded instructor responsible for teaching either a face-to-face or an online Web Design course with the potential to teach an Introduction to Computer Graphics course at the high school level. Additionally, there is the possibility to teach additional courses in future semesters.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • The instructional assignment will include Graphic Design studio classes in the discipline. The successful candidate will be able to teach Web Design face-to-face.

  • In addition to conducting classes, the job includes class preparation, student evaluation, program level assessment, student advising, attendance and participation in student art/design shows and various art/design scholarship programs.

  • Use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in their courses.

  • Attendance at department meetings and response to emails from students and supervisor within two business days is required.

  • Participation in discipline/department decision making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, scheduling and other matters are also expected of all Graphic Design instructors.

  • Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Education:(Minimum/Required)

  • MFA or MA in Art or Graphic Design

  • Also allowed: Master's degree in any field with 18 graduate credit hours in one of the related degrees and/or credential's identified below.

  • Applicants that do not hold the above degrees but hold a Bachelor of Fine Art or Bachelors of Art in Art or Graphic Design and can meet CCD's Tested Professional Experience requirements will also be considered (key experience includes local or national recognition in exhibitions, artistic contributions, publications, conference presentations, curriculum development, or extend employment as a practitioner).

Experience: (Minimum/Required)

  • Recent experience working with Latinx/Hispanic, African American, Native American and other racially/ ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom is preferred.

  • An understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes is required.  Successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to continually examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support various groups of marginalized students. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.

  • The candidate must have expertise in culturally responsive teaching in design, which will address equity gaps within studio art courses and classrooms. The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

  • A demonstrated ability to teach Graphic Design to an underrepresented and diverse student population at a community college or baccalaureate level institution is required.  The ideal candidate will show evidence of utilizing a diverse canon in their classroom as to address the equity and achievement gaps in higher education.  The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and practices for engaging our diverse student population in addition to having the ability to teach well; create and develop curriculum; work well with others (students, faculty, staff, and administrators); and fulfill the duties of a full-time faculty member in a shared governance environment.
