Visitor Center Attendant

The Town of Concord is seeking part-time staff to provide services at our Visitor Center. Attendants greet and welcome all guests and visitors, provide insightful information on sites of interest. Various shifts available between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, 7 days a week. Hours could range from 5-19 per week.

Starting pay rate: $15.00 per hour. This position is part-time and on an as-needed basis.

Applications will continue to be accepted and may be considered until all shifts are filled. The most highly qualified candidates will be invited to one or more interviews and/or other assessments. All applicants will be notified of their standing in the process as soon as a decision has been made regarding their individual application.

Appointment of the final candidate will be contingent upon the results of pre-placement conditions including a credit check and drug screening. Costs for these pre-placement requirements will be borne by the Town. Cost for the Concord History course to be borne by applicant.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Tourism Manager, greets and welcomes all guests. Provides insightful information on sites of interest for visitors. Continuously develops knowledge of tourist sites through reading materials and communicating with site officials. Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under the direction and control of the position. Incumbents are required to have a moderate to extensive knowledge base regarding historical and factual events, places and people relative to Concord, Massachusetts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Greets and welcomes all Town Visitors to the Center; provides tourists with general information regarding events and points of interest.

  • Answers telephone and email, responding to general questions about Concord.

  • Records number of guests that visit the Center in the daily visitor log.

  • Registers individuals and groups for walking tours.

  • Accepts payments for gift shop merchandise and historical tours. Reconciles receipts at the end of each business day and records transactions on ledger for finance staff.

  • Maintains stock of Concord-specific literature; coordinates re-ordering of supplies and materials from area business, Chamber of Commerce and Town officials.

  • Assures high degree of Center cleanliness, organization, and professional presentation; checks on restroom facilities periodically throughout the day, reports issues to managers immediately.

  • Performs simple cleaning duties such as sweeping and/or mopping floors, wiping counters, cleaning glass windows, dusting, and restocking paper products in throughout the day.

  • Communicates with management regarding facility needs or concerns in a consistent and immediate; alerts managerial staff to trends in visitor requests, inquiries, and comments.

  • Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace is required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus six months of office/administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in customer service with a focus on cultural and historical locations. Registered and Licensed Tour Guide Certification for the Town of Concord preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to effectively communicate verbally with members of the general public and visitors. Ability to effectively handle all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers.

  • Working knowledge of the Concord community including the historical and tourist locations is essential; must be able to recognize and articulate details relating to tourist site information and point of interest nuances to Visitors and the general public.

  • Ability to work with a high level of detail, to prioritize multiple tasks, and to deal effectively with interruptions; ability to change direction and rearrange tasks according to deadlines and circumstance.

  • Excellent customer service. Must be able to work with a wide range of personalities and provide consistent and excellent service.

  • Technical knowledge of Microsoft, point of sale platforms and Google Suite preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Normal office environment; during the summer months may occasionally be subjected to moderate variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc. Majority of work is performed inside the Center in a relatively noisy work environment, with constant interruptions. Frequently subjected to the demands of other individuals and the volume and /or rapidity with which tasks must be accomplished. Ability to stand for extended periods of time while serving customers at the Visitor Center.

Operates computer, iPad, calculator, telephone, copier, and all other standard office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching and stooping may also be required.
