Job Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Portland (UP) located in Portland, Oregon, USA invites applications for a faculty position of Visiting Instructor in the Department of Psychological Sciences to begin August 15, 2024.

The University of Portland is a primarily undergraduate institution comprising four professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences, which houses our strong liberal arts Core Curriculum, required of all students. The Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Portland engages the tools of science to understand the diverse human experience. As home to an undergraduate major and minor, we see psychology as a hub discipline that is central to the liberal arts while also offering a foundation for a wide range of meaningful professions. We orient our academic programs, along with our research and service, around enabling healthy lives and inclusive communities, including through the learning opportunities offered by our neighborhood, city, and region. Core Duties

University of Portland visiting faculty teach and serve the department, the College, and the University.

The successful candidate will teach introductory psychology courses which engage the Core Habit of "Scientific and Quantitative Literacy and Problem Solving." and will be welcome to propose upper division courses in their area of specialty in alignment with departmental needs. Teaching responsibilities include four 3-credit courses (or equivalent) per semester.

Education & Experience

  • Required: advanced degree (M.A., Psy.D., Ph.D.) in psychology or closely related field

  • Preferred: Experience teaching undergraduate psychology

  • Commitment to collegial collaboration (e.g., teaching, research, or service) both within the department and across the University.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle sensitive and personal information with sound judgment, tact, and discretion.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently: sit, perform desk-based computer tasks; use fine manipulation and grasp; use a telephone; write by hand; sort and file paperwork.

  • Occasionally: stand and walk; twist; lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Occasionally: ability to attend events and activities on or off campus.

  • Frequently: ability to interact and communicate with members of the University and others as necessary.
