The Visiting Instructor of English is responsible to provide excellence in teaching through the fulfillment of the missions and strategic goals of University of Northwestern - St. Paul. The Department of English & Literature offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. The English major is divided into three concentrations: literature, writing, and literature and writing. A related Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts/Literature Education major is offered through the School of Education. Four academic minors are offered: English, linguistics, literature, and writing.

What will I do in this position?

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach core university writing courses as well as literature, creative writing, or professional writing courses in the English major commensurate with department needs and the faculty member's specialization.

  • Advise English majors, fulfilling assigned departmental duties, engaging with students during office hours, attending department/faculty meetings and convocations and other functions as requested by the Department Chair, College Dean, or Provost.

  • Attending commencements, serving on committees, and being actively involved with professional organizations is encouraged.

  • Because our community is a significant part of our mission and the development of our students, all employees act as ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ by actively partnering with the University to disciple students in growing intellectually and spiritually and with Northwestern Media to lead people to Christ and nurture believers to mature in their faith.

What will it take to succeed in this position?

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • A graduate degree in English or a related field required; a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) preferred

  • Experience teaching English, preferably at the college or university level preferred

  • An active agenda for creative or scholarly projects with publication experience preferred

  • Experience in professional writing preferred

  • Experience using a learning management system such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas preferred

  • Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern's mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and academic advising of undergraduates

  • Commitment to student success that includes recruitment and retention

  • Strong knowledge base in educational foundation, instructional methods, classroom management, and teacher development

  • Understanding of curriculum and course development, including course and program assessment

  • Ability to integrate Christian worldview into classroom instruction

  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, kind, and tactful manner

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a team

  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule

  • Basic computer proficiency

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
