Job Title Visiting Instructor- English Position Type Faculty Job Description

The English Department at McMurry University seeks a full-time visiting instructor to teach freshman-level composition and literature courses. This position is renewable every year for up to three years, at which point the position can be converted into a permanent role.

The position includes teaching integrated reading and writing (IRW) support courses (as needed) paired with specific sections of Composition and Rhetoric. This co-requisite requires close collaboration with the composition professor on record to ensure students receive the necessary support for successful completion of the credit-bearing course (ENGL 1310). (Course content varies and is determined by the professor on record.) Additional duties include teaching ENGL 1320 (Introduction to Literary Studies) and any additional courses on an as-needed basis.

Essential Duties Summary

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Visiting Instructor will teach Integrated Reading and Writing, Composition and Rhetoric, English and any other classes upon need during both the fall and spring terms.

Instruction covers introductory and advanced undergraduate courses. Courses are delivered in a face-to-face classroom setting.

Principle Professional Standards:

1.Appropriate use of the University's Learning Management System (LMS): Canvas

2.Meet deadlines for submission of early grades, mid-term, and final grades.

3.Participate in graduation, faculty meetings, general academic assemblies, and other official university functions, as assigned.

4.Attend and participate in university-wide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.

5.Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.

6.Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.

7.Comply with published university policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching at the university level.

Principle Responsibilities and Duties:

1.Prepare and teach assigned courses to students based on the department's approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of students and the standards of the discipline.

2.Open-door policy for students and colleagues.

3.Participate actively in departmental responsibilities, including curriculum review and revision, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.

4.Campus activities and student organization sponsorship.

5.Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting course and program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.

6.Support university and department goals through active and collegial engagement.

7.Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department head, dean, and/or VPAA & Dean of the Faculty.

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in English (or closely related field) and at least 18 hours of graduate-level coursework in related fields (English; English & Writing; Rhetoric, for example). Additionally, a successful candidate must be committed to building an inclusive classroom environment on a diverse campus.

Minimum Required Education Master's degree Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications: College-level teaching experience.
