Summary:

The Department of Philosophy at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan is accepting applications for 4, one-year visiting faculty positions for 2024-25. Such appointments may be renewed for up to three years, depending on satisfactory performance and continued teaching needs of the department.

Benefits include medical insurance, life insurance, and tuition reduction for spouse and dependents. Contract begins August 6, 2024. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • ABD or Ph.D. in Philosophy, with solid grounding in history of philosophy and commitment to excellent teaching in the tradition of liberal education. Candidates must be able to teach across the introductory philosophy curriculum including Logic, Introduction to Philosophy, and Ethics. Candidates should also show evidence of teaching excellence.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

  • Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

AOS: Open. We have additional teaching needs in professional ethics, philosophy of work, aesthetics, philosophy/ethics of health, and philosophy of digital/social media.

Ideal candidates would be able to teach in one or more of these additional areas at the introductory level. The Department's course offerings can be found here.

Responsibilities:

Four (4) courses per semester, undergraduate. Summer teaching possible.

Salary/Benefits
