Summary: The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Grand Valley State University invites applications for a visiting teaching position in Spanish language for the 2024-25 academic year, renewable for up to three years.

The position will begin in August 2024. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish courses at the college level.

  • M.A. in Spanish or related field required, Ph.D. highly desirable.

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.

  • Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education: Applicants with experience teaching courses in Spanish for the professions, linguistics, experiential learning and dual enrollment are especially encouraged to apply. PhD in Spanish Cultural Studies, Literatures, and/or Linguistics at the time of hiring preferred.

Responsibilities: The visiting faculty position usually entails up to 12 credits (three classes) of teaching each semester.

Teaching responsibilities will include first- or second-year language classes, and possibly courses on the professions (e.g. business), dual enrollment (taught at a local high school), and other 300-level courses (composition, conversation, linguistics, literature and cultural studies courses). Visitors need to be flexible about days and times, as they will teach four to five days a week, including some evenings (6:00-7:50 pm), depending on needs. Instructors are responsible for creating class materials for 100-200 level courses in cooperation with the Spanish language coordinator.

Salary/Benefits: The salary is $50,000.
