Visiting Faculty In History

Summary: The Department of History at Grand Valley State University invites applications for full-time Visiting (non-tenure-track) appointments for the 2024-2025 academic year, with the possibility for renewal, at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor (or at the rank of Visiting Instructor if ABD).

• For the K-12 History/Social Studies Education position, the teaching load of four courses per semester will include U.S. History courses and Social Studies education courses for elementary and secondary pre-service teachers.

• For the History of the Americas position, the teaching load of four courses per semester will include surveys in US and World History and upper division courses in Latin American History. Candidates who can teach both US History and World History surveys and have research and teaching expertise in Latin American History are especially encouraged to apply.

• The History Department is especially interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations. Required Qualifications and Education for K-12/Social Studies Education position:

• Masters in History or related field.

• Demonstrated social studies teaching experience in K-12 setting.

• Demonstrated experience in pedagogical training for pre-service or in-service teachers.

• Demonstrated potential for university teaching in U.S. history and pre-service teacher education in history/social studies.

• Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education for K-12/Social Studies Education position:

• Ph.D. in History or Social Studies Education or related field.

• Experience teaching pre-service teachers or holding a similar position at the university level.

• Evidence of student-centered and relationship-centered teaching

Required Qualifications and Education for History of the Americas position:

• ABD in History PhD program or related field.

• Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education for History of the Americas position:

• PhD. in History or related field.

• Teaching experience at the university level.

• Ability to teach online as well as in-person

Responsibilities:

• Teaching four, three-credit courses per semester.
