The University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) seeks a visiting assistant research scholar to conduct research and participate in programming for the 1856 Project (1856P). The 1856 Project is UMD's chapter of Universities Studying Slavery , a multi-institutional consortium dedicated to sharing best practices for reckoning with the role that human bondage has played in establishing and sustaining their institutions. The 1856P was established to cultivate open and respectful dialogue to create deeper understanding and a path for restorative history. The UMD 1856P activities include

  • investigating the history of the African American experience on campus and in surrounding communities,
  • conducting research and analyses that identify and document UMD's historical connections to U.S. slavery and its legacies, and
  • disseminating findings to campus stakeholders and to the public through regular

meetings, community outreach and engagement, symposia, conferences, reports,

scholarly papers, and by creating teaching material and learning opportunities.

Building off already identified themes, the visiting assistant research scholar will develop, lead, and collaborate on research directly associated with the specific 1856 Project mission. The successful applicant will collaborate most closely with the1856P leadership from University Libraries; however, the visiting assistant research scholar will also be encouraged to collaborate with other colleagues and departments across campus in furthering the research objectives of the 1856P. The visiting assistant research scholar will also have the opportunity to establish a formal affiliation with an

academic department, particularly allied with the research scholar's academic discipline and/or research interests.

The visiting assistant research scholar position is full-time (12 months), and will be awarded for one year, beginning in the August of 2024, with the possibility of renewing. We seek applicants with doctoral degrees in African American or Africana studies, American studies, anthropology, archaeology, archival research, history, library and information sciences, or other disciplines allied with the 1856P's mission and objectives.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000; commensurate with experience.
