Job Title Visiting Assistant Professor, Percussion Department Music - 21500 Pay Grade 1 Job Category Faculty Job Summary

The Department of Music at East Tennessee State University seeks an outstanding percussion educator, performer, and scholar to head its percussion area. This is a one-year appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor, with the opportunity for renewal. This is a non-tenurable position.

Primary teaching responsibilities include applied lessons, percussion ensemble, percussion literature, percussion pedagogy, and percussion methods. Marching Band duties include front ensemble instruction and attendance at football games as appropriate.

Additional responsibilities will include the administration of percussion scholarships, coordinating all faculty in the percussion area, and recruiting and running the annual percussion ensemble festival. The chosen candidate will be expected to develop ongoing professional activity as a performer. The ETSU Department of Music is launching a new Master of Music program in the fall of 2024, and the successful candidate will be responsible for helping to craft the new graduate courses.

The successful candidate will be expected to cultivate positive alumni and community relationships, work effectively with faculty colleagues, serve as an academic advisor, participate in department and university committee work, and perform other departmental duties as assigned by the chair.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This job requires the ability to move large percussion instruments, especially for marching band work, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Required Qualifications

  • DMA in Percussion Performance or equivalent required (ABD considered but must have degree in hand by August 15, 2024),

  • Collegiate-level teaching experience.

  • Experience as a teacher of percussion, success as a performer, and a proven record of scholarship/creative activity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with marching bands and percussion front ensembles.

Salary Commensurate to candidate's experience.
