OVERVIEW:

This document describes the duties that Clarkson University expects of faculty members, as well as position-specific duties. These duties may change with each academic year through discussion with the department head and/or dean. Performance is reviewed and evaluated on the basis of how well these duties are performed.

Responsibilities for this position will include the following: teaching including holistic honors advising and service responsibilities. Service responsibilities, in addition to specific service responsibilities listed below, may also include involvement in off-campus, evening or weekend events and duties, as well as recruitment and retention efforts.

Because teaching is the fundamental responsibility of each faculty member, all faculty must participate in this activity. Adjustments to teaching responsibilities may be made in accordance with workload policy based on the type of courses that are assigned and the extent of responsibilities in other activity areas. ]

The Clarkson University Honors Program is comprised of approximately 250 academically gifted students. The successful candidate for this three-year Visiting Assistant Professor position embraces the Clarkson Honors philosophy, which emphasizes cross-disciplinary pedagogy, real-world engagement, and co-curricular and scholarly activity. They must embrace the value of knowledge and learning practices from multiple disciplines, emphasize collaboration and process over product, and encourage growth mindsets in the Honors cohort. They must also be dedicated to fostering a sense of community and willing to engage in the life of the program (community events, recruitment and admissions, etc.).

The Visiting Assistant Professor of Honors must have a background in Humanities or Social Sciences and experience with first-year students. Expertise in Digital Humanities is preferred but not required. The courses assigned include Interdisciplinary Approaches to Big Ideas, a first-year seminar course; as well as select non-Honors courses in their disciplinary field. The Visiting Assistant Professor will advise the first year cohort of Honors students.

TEACHING/WORKLOAD:

  • Teach three sections of HP100 Interdisciplinary Approaches to Big Ideas in Fall semesters

  • Teach three sections of a non-Honors course in their field in the Spring semester

ADVISING:

  • Serves as the Honors advisor for half of the first-year cohort of Honors students (approximately 40 students). The Honors advisor must meet with each student once per semester, and more often for particular students as needed.

  • Works in close concert with the Director and the Honors faculty and staff to identify and offer holistic support to any students who are struggling or facing personal or academic challenges to success.

  • Assists students pursuing competitive internships and scholarships through the development of application materials as needed, in coordination with other Honors faculty and staff.

  • Continue to develop their skills as a holistic advisor through workshops and professional development opportunities (eg. Mental Health First Aid, Safe Space, etc.).

SERVICE:

  • Represents, along with the Director and Program Staff and Faculty, the Honors Program in admission webinars, Clarkson visit days, and other student events.

  • Contributes to the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals as needed.

  • Attends professional development conferences to stay informed on national and international trends in honors programs/colleges. Where appropriate, organize student participation in these conferences.

  • Establishes and assesses measurable student learning outcomes, program goals, and objectives in assigned areas of responsibility; maintains reports, surveys and other records of accomplishments, appropriate student learning outcomes, and departmental needs.

  • Serves as an active member of the Honors Curriculum and Assessment Committee.

  • Other Duties as Assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimal qualifications/experience: The Assistant Professor must have a PhD in a field in the Humanities or Social Sciences and experience with interdisciplinary teaching or research

Preferred qualifications/experience:

  • previous advising experience
  • previous experience teaching Honors students
  • expertise in Digital Humanities
