The Department of Dance at Marymount Manhattan College seeks a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor whose area of focus is in dance studies and one or more dance/movement practice to begin Fall 2024, pending final budget approval. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal and carries a 4/4 teaching load.

Salary Range: $65,000-$68,000

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA in Dance or PhD in an area of Dance Studies, or Performance Studies, or a related field, with a clear dance-based research profile and movement practice.

  • Demonstrated college-level teaching experience (minimum two years.)

  • Demonstrated ability to teach, advise/mentor students, and develop curriculum that supports and empowers the educational goals of a diverse student body.

  • Ability to work collaboratively to advance the department's pledge to develop and implement recruitment strategies, curriculum and pedagogies practices that are equitable and inclusive.

  • A commitment to pre-professional dance training within the context of a liberal arts education.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach courses in dance history/theory which focus on social, political, cultural, and aesthetic aspects of dance practices, and engage with more than one of the following areas: African diasporic and African American studies, Asian and Asian American studies, Latinx studies, Indigenous studies, Disability studies, Gender studies, and/or LGBTQ studies. The ideal candidate brings expertise in mixed ethnographic and historical research methods through a range of disciplinary approaches, including embodied approaches.

  • Teach one or more studio-based movement practice (for example: form(s) grounded in Embodied Africanist Aesthetics, modern/contemporary dance, non-western contemporary form(s), and/or choreography/creative process-based course(s).

  • Create or re-stage choreography for dance majors.

  • Mentorship of students' creative and professional development.

  • Participation in divisional, college, and departmental meetings, academic advisement, student recruitment, and casting for department productions.
