Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology

The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology invites applications for two one-year Visiting Assistant Professors with a focus on instruction, to begin in Fall 2024.

Visiting Assistant Professor positions are non-tenure-track positions, hired on a one-year contract. A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or related field is strongly encouraged, though ABD applicants and those with relevant master's degrees will be considered. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Visiting full-time faculty teach 12 credits per semester, and will have the opportunities to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced coursework depending on their experience and areas of interest.

The Computer Science & Information Technology department has 8 full-time faculty members. The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology oversees programs leading to a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity; and a program leading to a Master of Science in Computer Science. The Department also offers service courses for other University programs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • The teaching of undergraduate courses in Computer Science, Information Technology or tangential fields as required by the University and specified by the Department Chair.

  • The faculty member should carry out service duties as needed within the department.

  • Supervision of laboratory work, if appropriate.

POSITION REQUIREMENT:

  • Education: a master's degree, a terminal degree, or advanced progress (ABD) toward said degree, in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a closely related field

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to speak to a group of up to 35 students in a classroom setting with an understandable accent and in a clear and audible manner, either directly or through a third party.

  • Ability to interact verbally with students in a classroom environment or with individual students in private meetings. Other means may be employed for student-faculty interaction.

  • Ability to use chalk and blackboard, markers and whiteboard or otherwise communicate graphically so students have adequate access to academic material. Alternate methods may be used for graphic communication.

  • Ability to use computer software as an instructional tool, both inside and outside the classroom.

  • Knowledge of the field of study is sufficiently broad to teach basic courses in the discipline. Teaching upper division courses may also be possible if there is enough knowledge for them.

  • Ability to use the telephone and e-mail for communication or to use alternate methods for effective communication.

  • Ability to grade student exams, term papers, reports, computer work, and other in-class and outside assignments.

  • Skill in sophisticated computer use and an ability to assist students in computer literacy in the field.

  • Ability to meet classes on schedule and carry out assignments promptly and timely.

  • Skill in interpersonal communication sufficient to interact effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, and members of outside constituencies.

  • Skill in reading, analyzing, summarizing and in other ways comprehending and utilizing written academic material.

  • Ability to write effectively in internal university communications, in interaction with outside constituencies, and in preparing scholarly and professional material.

HOURS:

Classes are typically held during the day, but all faculty members occasionally teach an evening course or laboratory section. Faculty are required to meet all classes as scheduled and to keep regular office hours at times that are mutually convenient for the student and instructor.
