The SD School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking the service of an incumbent who will assist in the development and implementation of transition plans for student age 14 to 21 statewide. This position is developed under a cooperative agreement with the Division of Service to Blind and Visually Impaired.

Required Qualifications:

Incumbent will coordinate transition activities with the Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired to ensure provision of services for students with vision loss on a statewide basis. Incumbent will oversee work experience program for visually impaired students at the SD School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, by establishing and supervising work placements off-campus, and establishing work placement on-campus. Incumbent will work closely with administration, faculty, guardians, staff, parents, students, LEAs, Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the business community.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Skills of blindness, low vision, and assistive technology for students who are blind or have low vision.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations.

  • Knowledge of IEP process.

  • Knowledge of resources to refer students and families.

  • Knowledge of community based programs.

  • Develops and delivers presentations to variety of audiences in a professional and engaging manner.

  • Maintains an ongoing working relationship with other state and community agencies.

  • Good writing skills and organizational skills are important for individual educational plans, accurate reports and correspondence.

  • Good interpersonal skills are required.

  • Must be able to work independently.

  • Must exercise sound judgement in the performance of assigned responsibilities.

  • Must be self-motivated.

  • Hours will vary, not over 40 hours per week.

  • Frequent statewide travel with overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a bachelor's degree in the social or behavioral sciences, education, or a related field and experience in providing technical assistance, job preparation, transition planning, preferably with individuals with vision loss or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Desirable Qualifications: A master's degree and five or more years of experience and certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals or the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification.
