Overview

General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB) is seeking a highly motivated engineer to support enhancements and new designs for VIRGINIA Class submarine electrical controllers.

The successful candidate will lead or support technical integration projects, develop and manage technical requirements, support cross-functional interface development activities, and manage the quality, progress, and budget of sub-tier supplier development activities.

The successful candidate will be required to work with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers as well as work independently. The candidate will be required to develop, maintain, and perform to long-term task plans, and communicate effectively with external and internal stakeholders. Additionally, the candidate may be required to support submarine and component manufacturing events which include overseeing system test, qualification, and troubleshooting. Travel will be required for this position. On-the-job training and mentorship will be provided.

Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows some work to be performed remotely and at home. This varies from position to position based on the amount of classified material the department interacts with, as well as a few other variables. Qualifications

Required:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering is required

  • 0-10 years of engineering experience

  • Project management experience

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with AC and DC motor controllers

  • Familiarity with integration of variable frequency drive controllers

  • Electric Motor design and integration

  • Component or Electronic Development and Design

  • Developing and managing requirements for DoD or commercial programs

Skills

  • Organizational skills to develop and maintain long-term task plans is required

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Solid problem-solving capabilities

The core focus of this group is electric drive propulsion component integration, development, test, and delivery to meet the growing need of the United States Navy for more capable and more affordable submarines. Department 489 is part of the Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Directorate responsible for developing components for the COLUMBIA Class (CLB) and the SSNX main propulsion systems (electric and hybrid). D489 is seeking engineers to support SSNX electric and hybrid (E/H) drive propulsion development, other related technical areas within the department, and/or to continue development efforts for key CLB IPS electric drive components.</p><p>Opportunities include, but are not limited to leadership development, software and model based software development, component and system level modeling using MATLAB, power system design and analysis, and mechanical design and system analysis.</p><p>Job duties</p><ul><li><p>Perform engineering calculations in support of component design disclosures</p></li><li><p>Generate/review engineering drawings and installation procedures</p></li><li><p>Interface with internal Electric Boat support groups</p></li><li><p>Preparation of technical correspondence between Electric Boat and suppliers/customer</p></li><li><p>Review of supplier technical and programmatic submittals</p></li><li><p>Strong understanding of component and ship specifications</p></li><li><p>Support testing and troubleshooting for components under test</p></li></ul><p>Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows some work to be performed remotely and at home.
