  • Improve user experience for millions of users of social media, computer gaming, and virtual reality/augmented reality


  • Work with world-class video compression designers and network protocol designers

  • Identify interactions between multimedia encoding schemes and Internet protocol performance

  • Identify opportunities for improvements in these interactions

  • Pursue high-impact publication and patent filings

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, preferably in the area of signal processing and/or AI
  • Knowledge of Neural Networks and AI
  • Strong coding skills in C and C++

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of media encoding and transcoding, packaging, and familiarity with media streaming protocols

  • Knowledge of RESTful API design and JSON

  • Experience with FFMPEG and/or other encoding/packaging open source tools

  • Experience with one or more public cloud platforms

  • Experience with one or more cloud AI systems

  • Coding skills in Python and Javascript

The team works on developing cutting edge technologies in multimedia data compression, processing, transmission, analysis and beyond. Some example areas include (but not limited to) video compression algorithms, future video coding standards, VR and 360 video coding and transmission, intelligent visual data analysis and representation, future immersive data compression and processing (e.g. point cloud, light field, etc.) Responsibility * Research, design, implement, and optimize novel algorithms/models that lead to improved video compression performance or higher perceptual quality. * Summarize the developed algorithms into academic papers, standard contributions and patent applications Minimum Qualification * In a master/PhD program in computer science, electrical engineering, math, statistics, or related fields * Related working experience/course work in image/video compression or image processing * Interest and experience in video compression and video coding standards * Strong coding skills in C/C++ * Ability to communicate/collaborate with other researchers/engineers * Ability to think out of box Preferred Candidates For This Position Should Also Have * Good understanding of state-of-the-art video compression algorithms * Working experience on HEVC, AV1, VVC, AVS or other video codecs * Publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences Tencent Palo Alto CA
