Job Title VP, Science Classification Grade 11: Range $190,000.00 - $220,000.00 Department Science FLSA Status Full Time | Exempt Incumbent TBD Supervisor (title) SVP Mission & Strategic Initiatives Location Remote Position Summary (Basic purpose or primary function of job) The VP, Science serves as the Arthritis Foundation’s science and medical research lead and is charged with managing and strengthening relationships with national and international scientific groups, as well as other committees and workgroups.

Reporting to the SVP, Mission and Strategic Initiatives, the VP, Science will provide leadership and will manage the Science team and work in collaboration with senior management, department heads, and key science/research volunteers to achieve organizational goals. Additionally, the VP, Science develops and delivers scientific and clinical presentations to major donor groups, the Arthritis Foundation’s Board of Directors, and presents at conferences and scientific meetings. The VP, Science also serves as the Foundation’s senior science lead and will develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key constituents including American College of Rheumatology (ACR), Center for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other organizations.

Job Responsibilities (Principal responsibilities or job duties) Oversee and lead all aspects of the Arthritis Foundation’s research and science initiatives, including strategic planning, development, and evaluation of all science programs. Provide oversight of the scientific awardee portfolio, communication of progress and results, and the oversight of the national peer review system for all awardee scientific proposals. Provide strategy for all aspects of the Arthritis Foundation Fellowship Program.

Provide strategic leadership and strategies that support our work in patient reported outcomes. Provide staff leadership for the Medical & Scientific Advisory Committee, and other scientific committees and workgroups as assigned. Provide staff leadership for the Science Consortium; oversee program event planning and agenda development; support the recruitment and membership of industry partners.

Leverage clinical, scientific, and business insights to inform and advise the development and implementation of cross-cutting strategies that support mission delivery, development and fundraising, advocacy and access, and marketing and communications departments. Be a national voice championing arthritis scientific research, development, and translation in alignment with the Arthritis Foundation’s brand; represents the Foundation on external coalitions, workgroups, and committees. Develop and deliver scientific and clinical presentations to major donor groups and to the National Board of Directors.

Establish strong credibility with donors, the scientific community, and other potential partners. Position the Arthritis Foundation as a conceptual and programmatic leader in arthritis-related scientific research areas. Represent the Arthritis Foundation in the arthritis community by developing relationships with appropriate professional organizations, academic institutions and government agencies involved in arthritis scientific research.

Supervise the development of publications and white papers and identify relevant opportunities to enhance the visibility and prominence of the Arthritis Foundation in the arthritis scientific community. The VP, Science will be responsible for preparing and administering the departmental budget and will leverage clinical, scientific, and business insights to inform and develop strategies. Other duties as assigned by the SVP, Mission and Strategic Initiatives.

Required Experience & Education Expert knowledge in rheumatology or similar therapeutic area. Strategic business experience with a healthcare, science, or non-profit organization. Exceptional strategic, analytical, and critical-thinking skills, including data mining experience and experience working with large amounts of data to develop innovative solutions.

Demonstrated leadership skills coupled with strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Highly developed diplomatic skills and a strong sense of collaboration with the ability to build consensus. Proven track record of fostering collaborative partnerships with various audiences, including volunteers.

Experience communicating scientific and clinical research concepts to professional and lay audiences. Demonstrated experience writing statements of work and managing contracts. Eight to ten years of leading research initiatives, preferably in areas relating to rheumatology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or clinical/ translational research, or equivalent pharmaceutical or medical device development experience.

Knowledge of clinical trial methodology, regulatory requirements governing clinical trials or related academia experience or has served as a scientific liaison to doctors or equivalent related experience. A Bachelor’s and advanced degree is required; a Ph.D. is preferred.
