The NBME is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides high-quality examinations for the health professions. Protection of the health of the public through state-of-the-art assessment of health professionals is the mission of the NBME , along with a major commitment to research and development in evaluation and measurement. The NBME was founded in 1915 because of the need for a voluntary, nationwide examination that medical licensing authorities could accept as the standard by which to judge candidates for medical licensure. Since that time, it has continued without interruption to provide high-quality examinations for this purpose and has become a model and a resource of international stature in testing methodologies and evaluation in medicine. Although the NBME 's mission is centered on assessment of physicians, it encompasses the spectrum of health professionals along the continuum of education, training, and practice and includes research in evaluation as well as development of assessment instruments.

The NBME has nearly 500 employees and is located in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood, home to some of the country's most esteemed universities, nonprofit research institutes, and research and teaching hospitals.

Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Vice President, Office of Research within the NBME 's Solution Design and Delivery (SD&D) Division. SD&D responds to identified and anticipated customer needs by (1) developing new assessment capabilities, (2) designing new solutions using existing capabilities, and (3) producing and enhancing existing solutions in response to product management requirements.

The Vice President is a member of the senior leadership of SD&D and reports to the Senior Vice President, SD&D. The role of the Vice President will be to collaborate with internal stakeholders and aggregate information from external sources to develop and monitor a research program to (1) develop new assessment capabilities in the context of issues of ongoing importance in healthcare , (2) identify solutions that meet customer and market needs and (3) support and improve current products. The vice president has an established reputation as a leader in his or her field of expertise, conducts an active program of research, and enhances the NBME 's research brand through publications, presentations, and other professional activities.

Primary duties performed in this position:

Assessment Horizons

  • Work with the leadership of SD&D develop and manage a strategic approach to monitor the assessment industry to insure NBME is aware of emerging assessment and measurement capabilities, issues, and technologies.

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Product Management (MPM) staff to monitor developments within the medical and medical education spaces applicable to assessment and measurement.

  • Coordinate a proposal and, if approved, administer a program to fund external researchers to conduct research related to NBME 's priorities .

  • Develop relationships with the medical education assessment research community (e.g. Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education) and identify opportunities for collaborative research and development.

  • Make recommendations for research priorities with near to middle term results informed by customer feedback, marketing results, competitive analysis, and advances in measurement.

  • Make recommendations for longer horizon research based on cutting edge developments in measurement, technology, and data analytics.

NBME Research Brand

  • In collaboration with MPM VPs and marketing & communications staff, develop and monitor the execution of a research communications strategy. Promote NBME 's brand by showcasing NBME 's research to measurement and medical education communities (e.g. social media, publications series, publications, presentations, and volunteer service).

  • Manage NBME 's internship program in Assessment Science & Psychometrics; develops and oversee other programs for collaborating with junior and senior scholars from external organizations.

  • Educate NBME staff about the research program and advances in measurement through newsletters, seminars, and presentations from external researchers

  • Lead planning and execution of research conferences that address important, but under researched topics (e.g. TIME conference.)

NBME Strategic Research and Development

  • Adopt and or develop a schema for classifying NBME research initiatives (including research supported, but not conducted by NBME ) and track all recent and ongoing research in that schema,

  • Facilitate periodic assessment of research priorities and recommend modifications based on progress on research projects, new trends in measurement, customer feedback, and business intelligence.

  • Oversee research administrative policy for the organization and develop processes for policy implementation (e.g., processes for obtaining IRB reviews and coordinating responses to external data requests handled by the RIC).


Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced degree in a discipline requiring study of and familiarity with research methodologies.

  • Deep understanding of medical or healthcare education, health systems, and current issues in the delivery of healthcare.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively disseminate results of research to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work closely and collaboratively with researchers and people from a variety of professional backgrounds.

  • Preference for significant research or operational experience across a range of assessments (e.g. performance, formative, non-cognitive, etc.).

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise the work of others.

Education: Doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., J.D, Ed.D)

Experience: Minimum 10 years
