Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) is seeking a Vice President of Development. This role is full-time, 40 hours per week. SUMMARY

The Vice President (VP) of Development at Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) holds a vital position within the organization, overseeing fundraising efforts and establishing strong relationships with various stakeholders. Responsibilities will include developing and executing fundraising strategies, cultivating relationships with donors, corporations, and foundations, and managing philanthropy teams. In addition to managing the annual fundraising efforts, the VP is responsible for managing capital, endowment, special project campaigns and events. The VP must have a strong background and knowledge in bequests, annual trusts, unitrusts, and giving through retirement plans and other future giving options is essential. This position plays a critical role in integrating planned giving into the overall strategic fundraising plan, collaborating closely with other members of the philanthropy team. Alignment with the CEO's vision and overall organizational strategy is crucial. An important aspect of this role is collaboration with the Government Relations Department to develop and execute funding strategies for the PPNorCal Action Fund c4 entity. Reporting directly to the CFO, this position is also a key advisor to the CEO toward driving improvement and innovation within the existing fundraising activities at PPNorCal.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following and other duties as assigned.

Responsible for Development strategic planning, resource allocation, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities. Provide innovative leadership for all annual fundraising initiatives, including direct response and online activities; major giving and planned giving; institutional giving; and events and event sponsorships. Lead a department of eleven total employees, in addition to consultants and contractors as needed.

Individual Giving and Events (50%)

  • With oversight of the Individual Giving Team, including goal setting, craft strategies to cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, identify potential major donors, and ensure effective donor stewardship practices.

  • Key advisor to the CEO regarding fundraising and donor cultivation strategies, including assisting in assigning donors and tracking our CEO's portfolio of 30-50 principal and major gift level donors.

  • Personally cultivate and solicit major individual, corporate, and foundation prospects. Manage a portfolio of 75-100 donors capable of contributing $50,000+.

  • Identify, educate, and engage potential donors on the advantages of planned giving, ensuring alignment between their philanthropic aspirations and the organization's mission and strategic goals.

  • Oversee regional fundraising events managed by the Individual Giving Team.

  • Collaborate with PPNorCal's C-Suite executives in fundraising by leveraging their involvement to foster donor relationships. Assign donor portfolios accordingly.

  • Support CEO with Board of Directors' activities related to enhancing the organization's fundraising leadership and capacity.

  • Plan, develop, and lead the organization's capital expansion campaigns including coordinating with Planned Parenthood Federation (PPFA) as needed.

  • As legally appropriate, work with Planned Parenthood Northern California Action (501(c)(4)) fund to raise funds.

Institutional Giving (10%)

  • Alongside the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving, build relationships and alliances with corporations and foundations.

  • Identify potential institutional donors, including foundations, corporations, government agencies, and other grant-making entities.

  • Assist the Institutional Team with institutional cultivation efforts, especially for approaching funding from newly identified foundations and "invitation only" foundations.

Development Operations and Direct Mail (30%)

  • Ensure that efficient operational and data systems are in place to support the timely and accurate execution of all fundraising activities.

  • Ensure accurate and timely reconciliation, reporting, and coordination with Finance.

  • Utilize metrics and benchmarking to enable on-going accountability and program refinement. Conduct performance analysis on all fundraising campaigns and activities.

  • Oversee a comprehensive plan for expanding prospect research and donor identification.

  • Assist the Operations Team with planning and developing annual Direct Mail, email, and social media campaign strategy and workplans.

  • Initiate new outreach efforts to expand the diversity of PPNorCal's donor community.

  • Develop a planned giving direct mail marketing strategy.

  • Develop and meet department income/expense budget projections.

Management & Administration (10%)

  • Contribute to the organization's overall leadership as a senior management team member.

  • Form a strong partnership with the CFO to communicate PPNorCal's finances and business plans to external constituents and our Board of Directors.

  • Provide leadership over development communications, including the annual report and newsletter.

  • Partner with internal departments to share information and develop integrated communications and social media strategies that advance fundraising and donor cultivation goals.

  • PPNorCal liaison to Planned Parenthood Federation of America regarding fundraising and development.

  • Represent PPNorCal with external audiences as assigned.

  • Contribute to the advancement of the fundraising profession and PPNorCal's professional reputation by speaking/presenting at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages three supervisors: Senior Manager of Institutional Development, Manager of Individual Development, and Manager of Development Operations. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities will include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work as needed; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.

  • Proven track record of devising successful annual and multi-year campaign strategies.

  • Demonstrated expertise in effectively managing donor portfolios and securing seven-figure gifts through strategic solicitation.

  • Passion for Planned Parenthood Northern California's mission, and ability to effectively communicate the case for supporting reproductive freedom and access to abortion and sexual reproductive health care.

  • Superior communication, writing and editing, and presentation skills.

  • Expertise in networking and advanced interpersonal relationship skills.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of flexibility and creativity within a constantly changing environment due to external factors impacting sexual reproductive health care.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree expected, master's degree preferred. Ten plus years of experience in fundraising and development, with at least five years of progressively responsible management experience. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point) and Raiser's Edge development software (or equivalent CRM database) is required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have reliable automobile transportation and a valid California Driver's License and insurance.

  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) is a plus.

Pay Range: Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) supports California's new law (SB 1162) enhancing pay transparency. This new law requires employers with 15 or more employees to include a pay range in job postings. The pay range reflects the compensation that a new employee can expect to receive if offered employment. Employees with more experience, education, and other qualifying factors may be compensated at a higher rate of pay. The pay range for this position is: $195,000 - $265,000 annually.
