SUMMARY OF POSITION:

This position reports to the President & Chief Operating Officer and serves as a dyad partner with the physician executive. Develops long and short-term strategic plans, for implementation by the individual hospitals and medical groups, regarding multi-disciplinary Musculoskeletal services as they align with the Penn State Health strategic vision. Maintains accountability for the development and evolution of Musculoskeletal services, with possible expansion to other services and areas, across all geographic regions and Penn State Health sites by working through the Health System Executive Council. Works in a matrix relationship with hospital and medical group leadership to identify and report on key metrics to effectively evaluate services, physician relations, financial integrity, and potential market opportunities. Facilitates and directs the Service Line Governance Committee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develops long-term and short-term strategies for Musculoskeletal services growth and performance, aligning with PSH strategic vision. Accountable for Penn State Health's Musculoskeletal services development to include business plan development, feasibility studies, market analysis/research, and Musculoskeletal services performance evaluation.

  • Designs implementation strategies in collaboration with PSH system, medical group, and facility colleagues that maximize potential for success and minimize operational disruption.

  • Execution of these implementation strategies is carried out by the local leadership at the facilities and medical groups. Works with the Governance Committee to evaluate scope and depth of services, physician manpower, financial feasibility, potential expansions, and opportunities to create market synergies.

  • Ensure that activities continue to support the teaching and research missions of the health system, in support of the Penn State College of Medicine.

  • In conjunction with leadership, evaluates services and market potential, conducts outreach activities, and manages onboarding of additional capabilities and assets, aligned with strategic growth targets. Those activities include identifying gaps in care, conducting competitor analysis, tracking market share along key services, outreach and relationship management with referring physicians (internal and external) and hospitals/health systems, and developing relationships that foster growth and improve quality and capabilities of Penn State Health Continuously evaluates new technologies and recommends adoption when appropriate for growth and continuous improvement of programs or services.

  • Assists Governance Committee in evaluating existing and emerging technologies that lead to treatment and diagnostic improvement in patient care activities.

  • Builds business case for actions; Conducts risk/benefit analysis, etc.; Monitors financial performance of unit/dept.; Manages unit/department, institute, and overall program budget and productivity standards.

  • Actively monitors operating and financial indicators and ensures budget adherence. Assesses capital equipment needs as part of the strategic plan, and works directly with Finance to identify a long-range capital deployment plan for hospitals, practice and ambulatory sites, and elsewhere.

  • Working with Physician Leader and PSH Finance, evaluates physician and Advanced Practice Provider productivity and works to achieve benchmarks and targets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Master's degree in Business, Health Administration or other related healthcare field required.

  • Ten (10) years of experience in a hospital or clinical setting, including service line development and strategic planning experience, to include specific areas of outreach and marketing required.

  • Seven (7) years of experience in healthcare leadership required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Broad Musculoskeletal services experience, including multiple subspecialties relative to the overall service line preferred.

  • Ambulatory or hospital administrator leadership experience preferred.
