We are seeking a Vice President of Human Resources with prior biotech experience to build and scale the Human Resources and Talent Acquisition function. The VP, Human Resources will be a member of the leadership team, a strategic business partner, a trusted advisor, a proactive planner, a change management navigator, and an effective overseer of HR operations. The ideal candidate will have experience partnering with R&D and Business leadership, is eager to roll up his/her sleeves and will have experience guiding a biotech transitioning from research through early drug development stages. This role reports to the CEO and oversees one HR professional.

Responsibilities:

Strategy and Leadership

  • Is a trusted member of the leadership team, partnering with heads of R&D and business functions to align the company's current and future org structure with strategic corporate objectives. Able to translate strategic business plans into HR strategic and operations plans.

  • Establish a physical presence, build relationships and trust with employees across functions and at all levels of the organization. Establish the HR organization as a safe harbor for confidential HR matters and viewed as a respected leader on all HR related issues.

  • Is forward thinking. Provides leadership and guidance to a young biotech through upcoming major organizational transitions, e.g. progression from research to development stage, transition from private to public company.

  • Provides leadership, mentorship and guidance to the human resources team, assisting in the resolution of human resources, compensation/benefits questions, regulatory and other issues, ensuring the team can effectively address the challenges of a growing and developing biotech organization.

Administration/Compliance

  • Oversee benefits administration including compliance with appropriate state and federal legislation, obtaining competitive pricing, identifying new or alternative programs, and training staff on new benefits.

  • Develop and ensure that all policies and procedures as required by law are in place including but not limited to a comprehensive Employee Handbook, EEO and Department of Labor compliance as the company grows. Establish policies and procedures around core HR initiatives to ensure equitable and streamlined processes.

  • Draft, implement and manage the overall budget for the human resources department.

Talent Recruitment and Retention

  • Develop and drive the overall talent acquisition strategy for the company, ensuring that the company hires best in class talent, who align with the Terremoto mission, culture and values.

  • In alignment with company priorities and budgets, provide guidance on insourcing vs. outsourcing decisions and timing for onboarding key skills/talent.

  • Oversee compensation, promotion and feedback practices to ensure equity (internally and vs. external benchmarks) in order to attract and retain the best talent.

  • Develop a comprehensive talent retention program inclusive of tangible (e.g. compensation, promotion) and intangible (e.g. training/coaching, scope realignment, resourcing) rewards.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, Organizational development. 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources positions.

  • Experience in biotech and pharmaceutical environments preferred. Experience in a venture funded start-up environment desirable.

  • Demonstrated success in all Human Resources functional areas within a fast-paced, research and development focused environment is essential. Must be hands-on and capable of producing work with limited staff. Strong work ethic and propensity for change and improvement.

  • A proven track record of successfully managing employee relations issues, navigating and leading the HR function through organization change, such as research to development stage transitions, and private to public company transitions.

  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a successful participant on the senior management team that provides the company leadership and direction. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with Board of Directors.

  • Proven organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and manage competing demands.

  • Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, maintaining confidentiality at all times.

  • A passion for building the HR/People function from the ground up.

  • The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in South San Francisco, CA is $300,000 to $320,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type, and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Terremoto Biosciences, is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work only in other states.
