The Vice President for South Shore Medical Center (SSMC) & Ambulatory Services at South Shore Health is a pivotal leadership position designed for a dynamic healthcare leader with significant experience in ambulatory care leadership. This role requires a unique combination of extensive leadership experience in a healthcare setting and robust business acumen to oversee the strategic direction and operational management of ambulatory services. The VP will be instrumental in fostering a collaborative, patient and provider-centered environment, while driving innovation and excellence in patient care and service delivery.

In this role, the individual will be directly reporting to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and will also have an indirect reporting line to the Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer. It is important for the successful candidate to be comfortable operating within a matrixed organization structure.

Key responsibilities include integrating clinical services within the health system, ensuring high standards of patient safety and care quality, and leading a diverse team of healthcare professionals. The Vice President will also focus on recruitment and mentorship, developing a strong team of physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in various specialties.

The Vice President will have a particular focus on the strategic oversight of South Shore Medical Center, the Women's Center, South Shore Urology, and the South Shore Hospital Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine. This includes ensuring that these entities are aligned with the system's overall vision for ambulatory services, optimizing patient access, and coordinating care across multiple service lines.

This role is ideal for a healthcare leader with significant experience in ambulatory care leadership seeking a unique opportunity to shape and grow ambulatory services, enhance patient experiences, and contribute significantly to the strategic goals of South Shore Health. This leader will also drive change at a time when primary care is struggling nationally with shortages of providers as well as great cultural and technological changes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Formulating a strategic vision for SSMC that aligns with South Shore Health's strategy, infused with clinical insight and foresight as well as input from providers, colleagues, and patients.

  • Spearheading the execution of this vision, ensuring operational excellence, with a strong focus on patient-centered care and provider well-being.

  • Managing the financial performance of SSMC, including revenue, expenses, and achieving fiscal targets.

  • Intensifying the integration of SSMC with South Shore Health to create a seamless patient experience and a unified systems approach.

  • Setting and executing SSMC's annual and long-range goals in tandem with South Shore Health leadership, with an emphasis on adapting to the evolving ambulatory care landscape.

  • Championing a cultural evolution to enhance patient access, digital engagement, operational efficiency, and staff well-being.

  • Expanding SSMC through strategic physician and advanced practice clinician recruitment, and patient population growth.

  • Attaining high standards in quality, safety, clinical outcomes, and patient experience.

  • Leading SSMC's value-based care initiatives in collaboration with clinical leadership, optimizing performance within the Integrated Delivery Network.

  • Revising governance structures to clarify roles and enhance management at all levels.

  • Directing the SSMC team, fostering career development, mentorship, and the achievement of both individual and team goals.

  • Facilitating transparent communication pathways within SSMC, ensuring timely information flow and inclusive decision-making, while representing SSMC's interests within South Shore Health and its Board of Directors.

Ambulatory Services

The Vice President for Ambulatory Services at South Shore Health is a senior healthcare leader charged with the integration and performance enhancement of Ambulatory Services across the system.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing oversight of Hospital-based Ambulatory Clinics such as the Wound Center, Pain Center, and an advanced cardiovascular clinic, ensuring they align with the overarching cardiology and affiliated medical groups.

  • Demonstrating expertise in Epic Ambulatory system operations, encompassing the Ambulatory Module and interfacing modules critical to patient and employee experiences in ambulatory settings.

  • Directing the strategic vision for ambulatory services, propelling operational excellence within South Shore Health System.

  • Collaborating closely with other senior leaders on cross-functional teams to drive strategic growth and performance improvements in areas including clinical operations, value-based care, quality, safety, and patient experience.

  • Collaborating with the Hospital at Home program to ensure seamless coordination of care for patients eligible for the program, both pre- and post-admission, and fostering a strong partnership to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Responsibilities:

The role necessitates office and clinical settings work, participation in meetings within and outside the hospital, and availability for early, late, and weekend commitments to meet the dynamic needs of the healthcare environment.

Leadership

  • Fostering cohesive relationships among clinicians and staff within SSMC and the broader South Shore Health network.

  • Spearheading initiatives that enhance performance, showcasing data and trends, and advancing volume and utilization metrics.

  • Committing to continuous refinement of systems and processes to bolster efficiency within SSMC and Ambulatory Services.

  • Crafting and enacting policies in line with hospital standards and best practices, adapting to evolving administrative and financial demands.

  • Serving as the go-to expert for administrative guidance, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing operations through innovative system and procedural adaptations.

  • Establishing transparent and impactful communication channels with executive leaders, hospital and physician colleagues, clinical and non-clinical staff.

  • Maintaining an up-to-date understanding of healthcare trends, with a keen focus on strategic planning, financial developments, and emerging technologies and programs relevant to Ambulatory Services.

  • Collaborating with the Integrated Delivery Networks (IDN) to enhance care coordination, improve patient outcomes, and support value-based care initiatives.

Service Management

  • Enhancing service provision in collaboration with clinical and operational leadership, ensuring safe and quality care while optimizing system-wide resources.

  • Regularly reviewing SSMC and Ambulatory Services operations, addressing administrative challenges, and driving improvements in clinical services.

  • Analyzing capacity data, employing modeling for patient throughput efficiency, and guiding clinical and administrative staff in data-driven decision-making to bolster process improvement.

  • Assisting in managing Integrated Delivery Network (IDN) and Accountable Care Organization (ACO) quality and efficiency, aligning with broader healthcare objectives.

  • Working closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and other clinical leaders to spearhead initiatives that uplift patient safety and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Leading the integration of information systems enhancements, monitoring upgrades, and overseeing the introduction of new technologies to support clinical services.

  • Fostering a collaborative environment with nursing, operations, and finance departments to ensure seamless service delivery and operational excellence.

Capital Management

  • Steering space planning and allocation for current and future ambulatory facilities, ensuring alignment with clinical needs and strategic objectives.

  • Managing vendor relationships and collaborations, focusing on partnerships that enhance ambulatory service delivery.

  • Working with the support services leadership to ensure capital planning is integrated with the clinical vision for SSMC and Ambulatory Services.

  • Guiding medical device utilization and product approval processes to ensure optimal patient care and service efficiency.

Financial Management

  • Overseeing cost center management, achieving financial targets, and upholding the ongoing fiscal health of SSMC and Ambulatory Services.

  • Promoting cost-effective practices by monitoring trends and managing resources, including staffing and supplies.

  • Conducting comprehensive financial analysis, reporting, and implementing strategies for cost containment.

  • Coordinating with the Finance department to standardize reporting, ensuring compliance with credentialing and addressing professional billing matters efficiently.

  • Collaborating with leadership for budget preparation, performance forecasting, and margin target setting for SSMC.

  • Supervising financial teams to maintain integrity, ethical standards, and confidentiality in all financial dealings.

  • Overseeing the provider compensation model, making changes and adjustments as needed.

System Engagement

  • Collaborate with senior clinical and strategy leaders to synchronize system-wide goals with ambulatory services' operational capabilities, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient, cost-effective patient care and provider experiences.

  • Act as a consultant to guide operational policies and best practices throughout South Shore Health.

  • Champion system-wide asset management, serving as a model and mentor for optimizing care delivery and advancing predictive capabilities.

  • Take on a leading role in system-level value analysis, focusing on cost-effective care delivery.

  • Lead system-wide standardization initiatives to achieve cost savings and operational efficiencies while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

Human Resources Management

  • Collaborate with Human Resources to oversee recruitment, personnel transactions, and implementation of institutional policies, ensuring alignment with clinical staffing needs.

  • Utilize HR systems to manage team changes, performance reviews, and salary adjustments, maintaining the highest standards of team productivity.

  • Supervise professional and support staff via a team of managers, implementing change management and resource optimization initiatives to enhance care delivery.

Other

  • Oversees general administrative matters within SSMC and Ambulatory Services.

  • Develops letters, presentations, announcements, and other communications. All documents must be of the highest caliber of refinement and professionalism.

  • Serves as a stand-in for the EVP/COO in relevant meetings when the EVP/COO is not available. Serves on committees as needed or assigned by the EVP/COO.

  • Leads or participates in special projects and perform other related tasks as requested or required.

Education & Experience

Education/Certification

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree strongly preferred.

  • Board Certification in an appropriate specialty preferred for MD/DO candidates, with a requirement for extensive experience in an ambulatory care setting.

  • For non-MD/DO applicants, a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Health Administration (MHA), Public Health (MPH), or equivalent is required, along with demonstrated experience in ambulatory care leadership.

Experience

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare setting, with substantial experience in clinical leadership roles such as Medical Director, Department Chair, or similar positions.

  • Candidates should have experience managing an outpatient practice, preferably at the level of Medical Director or above.

  • Extensive experience in strategic planning, operations, and financial management within a healthcare environment.

  • Demonstrated success in physician recruitment, team building, and leadership in a multidisciplinary setting
